Band was formed in Tokyo led by Toru Kishida. He played as the guitarist of The JUICE that released by Japanese major label.In 2003, Toru met Hidenori Uchida, played as the bassist of Magic Curtain. They performed to the Alan Macgee's "Death Disco" and lots of Mod Event in Tokyo.
In 2004, Shuichi Kawai joined, then the new band as The Freaque started and played at many places so far. Making the new sound and colour in which groovy kind of 60s taste is absorbed, is their theme.Obviously, influenced 60s, British Beat, Psychedelic, Punk and 90s... However, their soul blows up something more than respect and love in them and new.

Japón me encanta a nivel de grupos mod, siempre tan perfeccionistas y tirando a revivalistas, sonando además bien, Shamrock, Phy, Badge, Mods, Bets o Revival y Collectors ,así. los que me vienen ahora a la memoria. Sólo conozco de Flake este mini LP de cinco temas publicado seguramente hacia 2004 y alguna canción suelta de su myspace. El Northern Soul es una de las variantes que tuvo el sonido de la Motown y Stax en los años sesenta. Sonido que se desarrolló en Inglaterra en esos años, más bien hacia el norte de Inglaterra, de ahí su nombre. Estilo que fue rápidamente adoptado por los mods, música bailable y que sonaba frecuentemente en los clubs de la época.
The Inciters hacen Northern Soul y son de San Francisco, eran, grupo numeroso de once miembros y con cuatro voces solistas, tres femeninas y una masculina que se van alternando en los temas de este su segundo disco "Doing Fine" (2000 ó 1999) dando un cierto aire de disco en vivo. Aparte de temas propios, hay versiones como "Lay This Burden Down", "Magic Touch" o "Lean On Me". Anteriormente publicaron "Movin' On" y el último fue "Well Well Well"(2002).
No es fácil encontrar sus discos, quizá el Well Well Well, incluso la página donde compré Doing Fine ya no lo tiene. Carátulas modymade.

TV Fly - Five Songs EP (2000)

TV Fly was a short-lived (Spanish) band with little published material that appeared at the end of the 90’s. Its members were J. Antonio Guerrero (bass & vocals), David Cazorla (drums & vocals) and Enrique Martínez (guitar & vocals). They played at Festimad, Moby Dick and the El Sol theatre as supporting act to DM3. They also accompanied the Dover band in several shows and they even published two tunes under the “Loly Jackson Records” label (belonging to the Dover) in the “The Power Of Dolores “compilation, and a single shared with Super Skunk. Masters of the three voices, it strikes me that no one was aware of their talent for making excellent power pop songs, because that’s what the never published “Five Songs EP” record is all about. Five unfinished and unmixed tunes recorded just before they separated… these things happen… I made the sleeves at that time, after knowing about Enrique ("ficuscactus", a web mate) and his songs. Listen to “Going Nowhere”, it’s one of those tunes that move me, and I don’t mean sissy-style, like the intro to “It’s Too Bad” in the “Dig The New Breed” (The Jam), that shiver that starts in your neck and trickles down your spine…

TV Fly fue un grupo de corta existencia y de poco material editado que apareció a finales de los noventa. Formado por J. Antonio Guerrero (bajo y voz), David Cazorla (batería y voces) y Enrique Martínez (guitarra y voces), estuvieron actuando en Festimad, Moby Dick o la sala El Sol en la que tocaron como teloneros de DM3, así mismo acompañaron a la banda Dover en varias actuacionesllegando a publicar dos temas en el sello “Loly Jackson Records” (de los mismos Dover) dentro del Recopilatorio “The Power Of Dolores” y un single compartido con Super Skunk. Maestros de las tres voces, llama la atención el que nadie se diese cuenta de su talento para hacer estupendas canciones de power pop, porque de eso trata el disco nunca editado “Five Songs EP”.Cinco temas grabados sin acabar de mezclarlos justo antes de separarse, cosas que pasan. Las portadas para este EP las hice en su momento tras conocer a Enrique ("ficuscactus", amigo webero) y sus canciones. Escucha “Going Nowhere” ,es de esos temas que me emocionan, no lo digo en plan ñoño, como la entrada de “It’s Too Bad” en el disco “Dig The New Breed” (The Jam), ese escalofrío que empieza enla nuca y baja por la espalda .......

Graham Day was originally signed as an artist in 1983 as a member of the Prisoners and we have been finding reasons to have him back ever since. We have released albums by the SolarFlares, and a complete set of Prisoners reissues including the recent “Rare And Unissued”, which involved a gathering together of all the bits and pieces of the bands career. Graham is a fantastic songwriter with an amazing voice, and we felt it was time to shine a spotlight on one of the most overlooked parts of his career.
In 1993 the Prisoners re-formed for a one-off gig at London’s Subterranea. It was a roaring success. Over the next year they would play a number of gigs, including headlining at the 2000-capacity Clapham Grand and playing a tour of Germany. However the reunion was never going to permanent as the Prisoners’ organist James Taylor was riding high with the JTQ scoring chart hits and touring the world. After hooking up with the bass player and drummer from the support band on the Prisoners’ German tour Graham Day formed a new band, Planet. Planet were a more groove-based outfit whose influences went beyond his love of classic 60s UK rock and into the realms of late 60s soul and Funkadelic.
It may have been inevitable that they would sign to Acid Jazz’ new indie label, Focus. Acid Jazz is owned by Eddie Piller, the Prisoners’ final manager, and he has an enduring appreciation of Graham’s talent. Signing Planet was a no-brainer. Graham thought that the signing might have been a move to try for a new Prisoners album, but as the JTQ was Acid Jazz’s biggest act, this was probably not his motive. Planet were allowed unlimited time in the Acid Jazz studio and recorded 17 tracks that made up the LP and various singles that appeared throughout 1995. The music has a strong rhythmic thrust and plenty of wah wah guitar, but it also is full to the brim with great melodies and vocals.
“Splitting The Humidity” was released in the late summer of 1995 but although Planet toured heavily around its issue, it was not destined to be the breakthrough for Graham’s talent. It failed to set the charts alight and the band split. What was left has a unique sound and deserves to be heard afresh.

Planet fue otra de las muchas bandas de Graham Day, no duró mucho, un año, pero dio para sacar unos cuantos EPs o singles ("Sky","Dog" and "Confusion".) y el disco “Splitting The Humidity” en 1995. Tras una tercera reunión de los Prisoners se formó Planet fichando por el sello Focus (Acid Jazz). El sonido de Planet se acerca más al de la última época de Prime Movers que al de Prisoners, quizá con un ligero toque Hendrix, pero no deja de ser Graham Day.
He añadido un esquema o árbol de las aventuras de Day, incompleto ya que es de hace unos años, falta The Buff Medways ,bajo, con Childish y Graham Day & The Galoers con miembros de Woggles.

Jarvis Humby - Assume The Position it's... (2004)

Try as we might, no one here can think of a name more British sounding than Jarvis Humby. He clearly must be the king of mod-swingers, this Humby character. What you say? Jarvis Humby is actually four blokes? Well then, they've set themselves up to quite a task with a name like that. They even put images of Keith Richards, the Who, the Beatles and a friggin' Union Jack on their album cover. Fortunately, these Humby boys deliver everything they promise. Pure liquid adrenalin R&B, complete with fuzzed guitars, white-boy blues vocals and an omnipresent Hammond that coats everything with a 1964 flavor. "99 Steps to the Sun" could be the official follow-up to ? & the Mysterians' "96 Tears," but they don't leave it at that. Opener "We Say Yeah!" is excellent if typical garage rock until the closing holler of "Yeah, yeah yeah" that you can imagine soundtracking the toga party scene in Animal House (originally filled by Lloyd Williams' "Shout"). "These Eyes" sounds like R.E.M. sounding like the Byrds, with it's antique 12-string tumble and "The 4th Man" is pure spy show/surf guitar goodness. Coming complete with white pants and Fender reverb, Jarvis Humby will make you want to grow your bangs, pop a couple of pep pills and head on down to Brighton to dance around and fight with the rockers. Jarvis Humby suele aparecer por la red como Neo Garage Mod band o Hard Soul band.... etiquetas que parece ser nos gusta poner a todo, asimismo comentan que se parecen a The Prisoners, que suenan a 60s.......... vale, a mí me suenan a Hammond. Con esto quiero decir que me dan igual las etiquetas o a qué suenan, a mí me gustan y los tengo en mi lista de escucha a menudo. Me despista un poco la poca información que he conseguido de la banda: single para Detour records (Get On Board My Train / Gwen Stacy 1996) , y supongo que un EP previo a este disco, Assume The Position it's..... aparición en algún recopilatorio (Halloween A Go-Go! de Little Stevens, Sugarlumps y Exile on Hammond Street), pero nada nuevo desde la aparición del disco que nos ocupa. Tres temas nuevos en su página de myspace .

Tres portadas distintas para el mismo disco y las ganas de saber algo más sobre esta fantástica banda. La última portada creo que pertenece a la primera edición del disco con 12 temas, ampliada a 14 en la siguiente edición, la que traemos aquí. Si alguien sabe algo más de Jarvis........

Mega Super Ultra - Power Pop Art (1999)

In the late 70's, parka-clad thousands took to beaches of Brighton to defend the Mod way of life, depicted in the classic film Quadrophenia. Bands like The Jam, Purple Hearts, Secret Affair, The Lambrettas, and countless others re-ignited the R&B influenced, energetic pop sound that had been missing in punk, yet still containing the intensity and emotion of the UK punk movement. Here in the United States, rock critics tend to cite this "power-pop" movement in terms of it's Chicago roots, most notably Cheap Trick, Green, Shoes, and Material Issue.....which is fine to the members of MegaSuperUltra, the 12 songs on "Power Pop Art" have been crafted from the very core of rock. The music is full of quick changes, stops, starts, and cleverly honed lyrics mingled with irresistible melody. These songs are non stop action, obviously based on the Mod styles and ideals of 1960's England but given an distinct American twist. The world is ready for this "brand" of feel-good pop again, directly targeted to the new high-paced Scooterist movement that is bubbling strong in the underground once again.

Mega Super Ultra are another one of those 3 piece Jam influenced Stateside '79 revival bands complete with parkas, targets, arrows and London imagery.
It's all very nostalgic and in the words of the band themselves "It's like growing up and wanting to be British". As much as this stuff doesn't seem to have much relevance in 2001 you still can't knock people for just believing in what they do. I've heard the best and worst of the revival revival bands and although I'd rather go out and find something new Mega Super Ultra are top class in what they do and well worth checking out against some of the other new mod bands.

Si se te ocurre poner en la búsqueda de tu navegador favorito las palabras "mega super ultra" puedes quedar sorprendido de la cantidad de páginas que las utilizan, incluso acompañadas de "hyper", el no va más. Puede que en españa estas tres palabras nos suenen a expresión un tanto "pija", pero no nos confundamos con este grupo, son de Chicago, son mods y vienen de nuevo a decirnos que cuando quieren los yanquis hacen muy buenas canciones mod, que suenan a jam a chords.... como siempre. Temas como "How stupid can I Be", "Salt" o "Seven Waves Away" me darán la razón. Disco publicado en Jump Up! Records. En 2002 sacaron "Back To Take Another Bow" y creo que estaban trabajando en otro disco pero no sé si han llegado a publicarlo (Mega Means More). Han tenido apariciones en recopilatorios:

The Gain - You Should Know EP (USA 1995)

Four songs, three great, one just mortal. The cover of "I Don't Mind" (Buzzcocks) is brilliant, and not just because it's such a cool song to begin with. These songs are simple rocking punk with elaborate vocals reminding me of Blatz but just with no girl singing. Out of hand is my favorite because I lean towards the Us against the World punk rock inspirational. (GS)

I'd like to start this post with a "you should know" review from The Gain's webpage. Another great single was posted in my blog, here. And searching for info about the band I found five live songs (At Fireside Bowl, 1997) in the record "V.M. Live Series 2 Volume 1" with another three bands: The Pist, Supernova and Brand New Unit. These songs will be uploaded soon...... Another EP: The Gain / Scared Of Chaka split (1995 702 records) is in the blog one-side war.

Grupo al que tengo especial cariño. Buscando información sobre la banda (y su "Highway to Heck") me encontré con el disco "V.M. Live Series 2 Volume 1", compartido con tres bandas más (The Pist, Supernova and Brand New Unit) que incluye cinco temas en vivo que subiré un día de estos (un mes, vamos). Puede que sea por eso la razón de volver a traer a The Gain, Quadroburbia ya apareció por aquí. De paso, podeís encontrar el EP compartido con Scared Of Chaka en el blog one-side war.

Aceface - Amazing Dementia (2000)

This EP’s sleeve features the parka-clad Torontonians on scooters. Mod, soul and Brit pop are the keys genres here, as the mid-tempo, guitar-based tunes are angular, groovy and melodic (respectively?). Paul Weller’s shadow appears in the slow-Jam of some tracks and in the vocals of front-man Carl Nanders, who with his constant Briticisms had better be from England, let me tell you. About half of this six-tracker is very good, a promising start to a career that will hopefully move beyond the Blow-Up set. (Lorraine Carpenter)

Aceface se formaron en Toronto en 1998. Publicaron su primer disco, este Amazing Dementia, en el año 2000 y quizás fue por entonces cuando les conocí. Tardé un tiempo en reunir los seis temas de su EP y no volví a saber de ellos hasta la publicación de su "Threat Level: Redwhhiteblue" (Fading Ways, 2004) en el que puede que variaran su sonido inicial hacia algo más Soul.... bueno, eso creo. En 2008 autopublicaron un EP de 6 temas "Aceface". Una muestra más de international mod.

The Aim - Call Your Name 7 (1994)

I only know The Aim through this single, published by Detour Records in 1994. I don't know if they have any other records but one thing I'm sure of is that this is a very good single. Two pure mod power pop tunes "Call Your Name" and "Out On The Street" and the lingering feeling of needing more.....
As you can see, the front sleeve sends us back to Jam's "Sounds Affect" and in the back the members of the band appear in streets wearing their names. Tony Duke, David Pryor and Steve White.
As usual: No links in Detour posts..... but you can leave your comments or send any question to my email.

Solo conozco a "The Aim" por este single, publicado por Detour Records en 1994. No sé si llegaron a publicar algo más, pero la sensación tras escuchar los dos temas del disco "Call Your Name" y "Out On The Street" es la de necesitar más, de preguntarte porqué no publicaron nada más. Dos canciones de puro mod power pop. La portada frontal recuerda a "Sounds Affect" de los Jam y en la trasera aparecen los miembros de la Banda (Tony Duke, David Pryor y Steve White) junto a letreros de las calles que llevan su apellido.
Como es norma con los posts de Detour: No hay Link para este disco, pero podeís dejar vuestros comentarios o preguntar 'cualquier cosa' a mi correo electronico.

Marshall Crenshaw (11 de Noviembre de 1953) cantante compositor y guitarista de Detroit comenzó a tocar la guitarra a los diez años. De 1968 a 1973 dirigió la banda "Astigafa", continuando una larga carrera musical, que le ha llevado desde interpretar a Buddy Holly en la película "La Bamba", a ser comparado con Alex Chilton en la influencia en el Power Pop, publicar un libro sobre el Rock'n'Roll en el cine, tocar la guitarra como invitado especial en la reunión de los MC5, escribir canciones de películas (Globo de Oro a la Mejor Canción Original por Walk Hard 2007) y a acomodarse en la música AOR y el Rock convencional.

Influenciado por el Soul y la British Invasion fue el creador de "Someday, Someway", que interpretada por Robert Gordon alcanzó el Top 40 de Billboard, siendo considerada una obra maestra del Pop y una de las mejores canciones de Rock. Técnicamente habilidoso e investigando la guitarra utiliza progresiones de acordes fuera de lo común acercándose al jazz en ocasiones.

Más conocido por sus dos primeros discos y sobre todo por el primero "Marshall Crenshaw" (1982) por la canción "Someday, Someway" y "Field Day" (1983), este su tercer disco "Downtown" (1985) está considerado como uno de los mejores de su carrera musical. Pop elegante, composiciones perfectas, empezando por la canción que abre el disco "Little Wild One (No.5)" con sabor Rockabilly, sensuales "Yvonne", influencias de los 50's en "Right Now" (ya interpretó a Buddy Holly en La Bamba), puede que necesite más de una escucha para apreciarlo, pero no te lo pierdas, merece la pena escuchar unas buenas canciones de Pop bien hechas. Producido por T-Bone Burnett y Mitch Easter junto a Marshall Crenshaw.

Back To Zero - Live At The Acklam Hall , London 3-5-79

Musical archaeology. One of my many bad habits is converting all my LP records and original cassettes to wav or mp3 , in an attempt to preserve what I think could get lost with time. It’s only another format change and, however much I work on it, the result is not always as good as hoped, but I like to do it. I copy it in wav from a cassette player to my PC, I use a program to separate individual tracks, I fiddle with the sound if needed, I convert it to mp3, at 320kbps if possible, and finally I scan the sleeves or add new custom-made ones. Some time ago I converted a Back To Zero tape, in what was maybe my third attempt. I bought my “original” tape from Detour Records when they sold LP’s and cassettes by mail, back when CD toasters still ran with SCSI cards. I fathom this tape is a copy of a copy of a copy. When you find bootlegs on the web you classify them in three categories: VERY good sound, acceptable sound and listenable. In this case the sound is listenable and maybe only appropriate for big fans or tireless collectors of any sound material. It’s a short concert, 8 tracks plus a sound check and, as indicated on the tape, it is their seventh concert. I won’t write about Back To Zero, I’d rather advise you to go here, where you will find plenty of useful info. Depending on your skills, it’s not too difficult to find the “Your Side Of Heaven/Back to Back” single on the web, the only single published by Fiction Records in ’79. The Your Side Of Heaven song already appeared here (this blog) in the Unicorn Records compilation “The Unsung Heroes”. ..................(Translation: madbarbax). Arqueologia Musical. Entre mis muchas manías se encuentra la de grabar en formato wav o mp3 todos los discos de vinilo y los originales que tengo en formato cassette. Es un intento de preservar aquello que creo se puede perder con el tiempo, no deja de ser otro traslado más de formato y por mucho trabajo que le dedique el resultado no siempre es el deseado, pero me gusta hacerlo. Hace tiempo que pasé la Cinta de los Back To Zero, pero este puede que sea el tercer intento, lo grabo en wav en el PC desde el reproductor de cassetes, utilizo un programa para separar los temas individualmente, trato el sonido si es necesario y finalmente lo convierto a mp3, 320Kbps si es posible, escaneo portadas o añado nuevas realizadas en plan casero por mí. La cinta "original" que poseo fue adquirida a Detour Records cuando se dedicaban a la venta por correo de vinilos y cass, supongo que cuando las grabadoras de CDs eran con tarjeta SCSI y sin ninguna duda será copia de cinta de copia de copia.......Siempre que encuentras bootlegs por la web debes catalogarlos en tres tipos: MUY Buen Sonido, Sonido Aceptable y Escuchables. En este caso el sonido es "Escuchable" y posiblemente sólo apto para aquellos que sean muy fans o colectores infatigables de cualquier material sonoro. Es un concierto corto, 8 temas más una prueba de sonido y, como se indica en la cinta, se trata de su séptimo bolo o concierto. Como comentario y remate a la calidad de la cinta, el tema "Peter Hall" aparece cortado ya que se termina la cinta. No voy a hablar de Back To Zero, prefiero dirigiros hacia el blog ModRevival , donde encontrareis información a vuestro gusto. No es demasiado difícil lograr encontrar el single "Your Side Of Heaven/Back to Back" en la web, único single publicado por Fiction Records en el 79. Bueno, depende de las habilidades de cada uno. The Offbeat - In Love Field (2010)

I’ve always thought that internet is cyclic. You start looking for something, you find something else that catches your attention, you look for other things and find them, you park them somewhere for later and after some time they come back. I got to know The Offbeat by reading some comments in a blog whose name I don’t remember, it arose my interest just enough to try and find some more information, and I found it in the friendly blog POWER POP ACTION (blog in Spanish, but you can find the comment in English here ), and in the group’s webpage , where I could listen to some tracks: Wasted, Blue Sky... I got a good feeling of POP songs, songs that bring back memories of holidays, green fields… it sounds trite I know, but well, it’s Sunshine Pop, isn’t it?
After some time I “chanced” upon two LP CD’s of the group, and this is when this particular Internet cycle ended.
By now you will have fathomed that this is not a “mod’ group, but when I like something I mention it. The Offbeat are not a conventional group, they are the pet project of Darren Finlan and Tony Coxx and Nigel Clark of Dodgy, both known in the British pop scene (the trio feature in Tony Coxx’s "Unpublished", 2009), who also feature in this "in love field" (2010) with 10 tracks that will inevitably remind you of the Beach Boys, the Beatles or Crowded House... Pop with a capital P; get smitten by the first song "She can make the sunshine" and let the rest of the tracks surprise you.
In fact this record contains five tracks already published in the EP "To The Rescue" in 2009, but it has been enriched with five more songs to become an LP, a duration which according to Darren Finlan can reach more people. The added tracks give some continuity to "in love field" and give you the impression of listening to a complete record created as a whole from scratch. In their webpage you can find tracks like "She can make the sunshine", "Blue Sky", "Something about the girl", "Someday somehow", which are in this record.

You can also find tracks from their previous work, "The Offbeat", 2008, composed together with Tony Coxx (six tracks feature in their record "Unpublished"), as "Wasted", "Lonely Girl" or "Keep it Real", where you can feel Darren’s touch. "Wasted" in particular is a very rounded song.
Both records are self-published, a very good reason to try and get them ‘legally’ and not with a miserly click.
In a nutshell, The Offbeat are a group that, as I’ve read in several webpages, will put a smile on your face… with me they have definitely succeeded.

Siempre he pensado que internet es algo cíclico, empiezas buscando algo, encuentras otra cosa que atrae tu atención,buscas y encuentras,lo dejas aparcado para más adelante y con el tiempo vuelve. Conocí a The Offbeat a través de alguna crítica en algún blog que no recuerdo, me produjo un ligero interés, lo suficiente como para intentar buscar algo más de información y encontrarlo en el blog amigo POWER POP ACTION , junto a la direccion de su página web, donde ya pude escuchar algunas de sus canciones: Wasted, Blue Sky..... la sensación fué buena, canciones POP, canciones que te traen algún tipo de recuerdo relaccionado con vacaciones, campos verdes... suena a tópico, lo sé, pero bueno, es Sunshine Pop.
Pasado un cierto tiempo conseguí de manera "casual" los dos CDs de larga duración del grupo y es cuando el ciclo de internet se cierra con este comentario.
En principio ya tienes claro que no se trata de un grupo "mod", pero si algo me gusta hablo de ello. The Offbeat no es un grupo convencional, más bien es el proyecto de Darren Finlan y colaboradores: Tony Coxx y Nigel Clark de Dodgy, ambos ya conocidos de la escena pop inglesa (este mismo trio es es que aparece en el disco de Tony Coxx "Unpublished" de 2009) y que aparecen en este "in love field" (2010) con 10 temas que inevitablemente te recordarán a Beach Boys, Beatles o Crowded House....Pop en mayúsculas, déjate atrapar por la primera canción "She can make the sun shine" y sigue sorprendiéndote con el resto de temas.
En realidad este disco ya tenía cinco temas publicados con anterioridad en el EP "To The Rescue" de 2009, pero ha sido ampliado con cinco canciones más para obtener un larga duración, formato con el que Darren Finlan opina que puede llegar a más gente.Los temas añadidos dan continuidad a "in love field" dándote la sensacion de disco compacto o completo. Temas como "She can make the sun shine","Blue Sky","Something about the girl","Someday somehow" pertenecientes a este disco las puedes escuchar en su pagina web. También aparecen temas de su anterior trabajo "The Offbeat", 2008,compuesto junto a Tony Coxx (seis temas aparecen en su disco "Unpublished") como "Wasted","Lonely Girl"o "Keep it Real" donde se nota el sello de Darren, en especial "Wasted" es una canción redonda.
Los dos discos son autopublicados, razón de más para intentar conseguirlos de manera 'legal', no con un sencillo click.
Resumiendo, The Offbeat es un grupo que como he podido leer en varias páginas web, hará que aparezca una sonrisa en tu cara, conmigo lo ha conseguido.

Here is a live set from one of my favourite bands, The Insomniacs. There are many bootlegs on the net (in general), most with really bad sound,suitable only for hard-core fans. This one is not the case, the sound of this file is very acceptable, twelve songs picked from their three albums released before 2005.
This archive has no artwork, I made the front cover from their myspace and for the back cover I used the Wake up inlay.
I have some recordings, appearances on radio shows, which I might post in the future .....

New Jersey's mod power pop trio the Insomniacs formed in Englishtown in 1989 when their previous incarnation, the Tea Club, fizzled out after a year of rehearsals and infrequent gigs. By 1991, the group, made up of brothers David Wojciechowski (bass) and Robert Wojciechowski (guitar) and drummer Michael Sinocchi, released their debut 7", My Favorite Story, on Umbrella Records. The Time Ticks By and Going Out of My Mind singles followed, and in 1994, the band put out its self-titled EP on Estrus, known among fans as "the ghoul record." The next two years brought the Sylvia Gray and Already Down 7" records. The band's first album was delayed by the infamous Estrus warehouse fire, but in 1997, the Insomniacs finally debuted their first full-length of catchy munster rock, Out of It. Pues The Insomniacs son uno de mis muchos grupos favoritos, seguidos desde su primer disco y siempre buscados. Podía haber hecho el post con cualquiera de sus discos publicados ,pero he preferido hacerlo con algo que no sea tan fácil de encontrar. Concierto del 2005 en la sala Maxwell's , New Jersey, con buen sonido y donde repasan canciones de todos sus discos..... no me cansaré de escucharles......
En la parte escrita en "inglés" teneís enlaces a su myspace y a Estrus, aparte del comentario de que Mike Sin, batería, formó junto a Stu Rutherford de The Creatures Of The Golden Dawn el grupo "The Royal Purple", grabando unos cuantos EPs, que fueron (o son) distribuidos de manera gratuita por ellos mismos, pop psycho de agradable escucha. VVAA - Mod World Hammond Vol 2 (2008)

Another personal recop, six bands, most of them from Hammondbeat Records a good label for Hammond sounds.

The Boogaloo Investigators were formed in 2001, originally (and very briefly) as an instrumental group inspired by Booker T & the MG's, The Meters and The Sugarman 3. That idea lasted about a month or two.
Initially playing late 60's and early 70's influenced Funk and Soul music the group's sound almost instantly incorporated an ever growing Rhythm & Blues element, based a lot more around songs with singing in them, as it were. The first 2 singles established the band as a funk band in the eyes of the record buying world. Unfortunately, their live set showed a band playing 60's style dance floor R&B getting booked for countless funk nights.........................

Paolo Apollo Negri (born 1979) starts his musical career with prog trio Nice Price, realizing a mini-album and a few compilations. The Hammond organ, his primary instrument, is soon joined by several vintage machines: Moog and ARP synthesizers, electric pianos, Eminent and Mellotron to name just a few................ Info

Organ led instrumental funk band The Getup were formed in 2005 by Hammond player Mark Ashfield. A student of Acid Jazz Hammond legend James Taylor, Mark sought some like minded musicians to let out his tonewheel urges, and in 2005 met up with a guitar playing friend and drummer from the north of England and promptly wrote and recorded Nelson Street. Cuarteto de Copenhagen, Dinamarca,grupo instrumental donde el Hammond juega parte destacada, desde luego parece que han nacido para interpretar bajo Hammond,se les nota tablas, tienen publicadas no oficialmente unas cuantas actuaciones en vivo en la que podemos apreciar su calidad musical.Muchas versiones entre las que incluyo "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" , tema muy versioneado por los grupos Hammond ( otro tema del que hay muchas versiones en el mundo hammond es "Crosstown Traffic"). Publicaron en 2007 el EP "With The Hammond ,in the Beauty" .(en este blog)

Paolo "Apollo" Negri
Puede que alguno conozca a este músico italiano como uno de los componentes de The Link Quartet, pero aparte de publicar en solitario, forma parte de "Modulo5","Low Fidelity Orchestra","Fred Leslie's Missing Links"e incluso del grupo hard-progresivo "Wicked Minds",desde luego se mueve.En sus muchos grupos no descarta la utilización de moog, sintetizador,piano electrico o mellotron, aparte del Hammond, claro. Ha publicado el álbum "A Bigger Tomorrow" (sin portadas) en el 2007 y aquí incluyo entero su EP "Applecore"del mismo año. (en este blog)

The Fast 3
Fundado en Inglaterra por los hermanos Wilkinson, Fast 3 es un trío de órgano, guitarra y batería afincado en Barcelona desde 2005. Con un sonido inspirado en los grupos de organ hammond de la década de 1960, su repertorio incluye temas originales de una mezcla explosiva de soul/funk y estandards del jazz y del pop que los vuelve irresistibles en las pistas de baile. Su primer disco, The Grifter, salió a la luz en 2006 bajo el sello One Note Records (Inglaterra) y tuvo un inesperado éxito de ventas en Japón. Próximamente sacarán un disco en homenaje a Grant Green, maestro incomparable del jazz más swingeante, en Doodlin' Records (Estados Unidos). Con su electrizante actuación, Fast 3 fue la gran sorpresa del Soul Cooker Festival 2007 en Francia. Boogaloo Investigators
Grupo escocés formado en el 2001,al que parece que desde un principio se les asoció con el funk y soul, realmente optaron pronto por una música más R&B, pero difícil quitarse de encima una etiqueta. Han venido a nuestro país en bastantes ocasiones creo que la última para promocionar su disco "Dynamighty!"(portadas hand-made) en el 2005. En el año 2006 cambiaron de nombre a "The Five Aces", quizás para poder hacer el tipo de música que les gusta.

Captain Hammond
Seguramente os suena el grupo "Mother Earth",Bryn Barklam decidió formar Captain Hammond junto a Greg Boraman y Pete Collison para tocar soul, funk, R&B... dentro de un estilo 60s. Puede que esto ya no sorprenda a nadie. Lo curioso de este grupo es la asociación con el mundo del comic al crear el personaje de estilo manga "Captain Hammond",mitad hombre mitad órgano, que se supone salvará al mundo de la música mecánica de sus enemigos MECHANAUTS. Los temas pertenecen a su disco del 2008 "The Origin Of Captain Hammond" (sin portadas) y una versión de "Gimme Some Lovin'"del EP Cosmic Cantina

The Getup
Este grupo inglés está liderado por Mark Ashfield,que ha estudiado a conciencia a James Taylor (quartet) y que ha colaborado con gente como The New Mastersounds, Stoned Soul Picnic,Mother Earth,Speedometer.... y JTQ. Sólo incluyo dos temas por no tener más, pero es un grupo del que seguiré buscando. El el 2007 publicaron el EP "Getup & Groove!" y supongo que estarán a punto de sacar su primer larga duración. No confundir con el grupo de mismo nombre pero Californiano de Los Angeles, que también hacen música funk, soul......

A Few Years Ago: 021 "The Pop Song" (1982)

I learned about 021 while searching for something different in the web, you know, you look for one band, go to one webpage and another and another anf finally you find 021 and their "The Pop Song" single. Two fantastic songs (Aversion! in B side) with a touch of Mod Powerpop. I can't find anything more.
A few days ago I received an email from Mike (021 member, bass) and I think it's better to show you the entire mail:

Hiya! Some time ago I was in a band called 021, based in Birmingham England.

We released a single called "The Pop Song" which was and is still popular on the Mod & Powerpop scenes. This song, along with others has been re-released on a compilation album called "Mell Square Musick". The album has received rave reviews, most reciently in the Sunday Times. If you follow the links below to either Amazon or itunes you can download individual tracks. Suggest download "Class of 78" and/or "The Pop Song".
Should you do this, then a full album of 021 tracks will be released in the new year.
Hope you don't think this request too cheeky, but it could be a dream come true for me. Thanks.

Es seguro que lo encontré en internet uno de esos días que vas de una página a otra buscando en principio algo concreto y lo que acabas encontrando es algo totalmente distinto, olvidando la búsqueda inicial. Me encontré con dos temas powerpoperos que asocié con el entorno mod por el comentario del post. No encontré nada más del grupo. Pero hace unos días recibí un email de uno de los componentes de 021, Mike (lo teneís más arriba) informándome de la aparición de varios temas en el recopilatorio "Mell Square Musick" (originalmente un EP de 1979 con seis temas, reeditado y ampliado ahora, 2010, con el tema "Robot (don't you wanna be)" con aires punkis y un sonido que espanta, je, menos mal que evolucionaron....) junto a tres bandas más y en el que recomendaba el tema "Class of 78" más la ilusión de la posible publicación de un albun completo de 021. Así lo espero.
Podeís escuchar los temas y puede que bajar algunos en los enlaces indicados. Información de la banda en su página de myspace .(junto a unas cinco canciones)

De momento nos contentaremos con escuchar estos temas, pero si alguien quiere buscar en google poniendo; 021 "The Pop Song" , puede que encuentre algo.

Tangerine Records is a UK-based independent record label founded in 1992 by musician Paul Bevoir, music journalist Chris Hunt and marketing executive John Ashworth. The label specialised in reissuing collectable vinyl recordings on CD, focusing on mod, psychedelic, power pop and bubblegum pop genres. Acts released by the label have included The Jetset, The Moment, Direct Hits, Squire, The Cleaners From Venus, Dee Walker, Paul Bevoir and The VIPs.

Recopilación de grupos Mod realizada por el sello Tangerine Records.
Soy consciente de que las palabras Mod y recopilación podrán echar para atrás a más de uno. Para los que hayan aguantado y den un vistazo a los grupos que aparecen se encontrarán con conocidos como Jetset, Direct Hits, Moment, Squire, Mood Six ..... pero también aparecen grupos que estuvieron relacionados con ellos de una u otra forma como Melvyn & The Smartys, Cleaners from Venus,Smalltown Parade, Paul Bevoir, Dee Walker, The Candees.
Tangerine Records es un sello ligado a Paul Bevoir desde 1992 y especializado en editar - reeditar a grupos del "revival" mod de los 80s, vertiente POP. Es en esta recopilación donde descubrí un par de canciones de lo mejor del pop que he escuchado: "Maybe Not" de Bevoir y "Modesty Blaise" de los "Direct Hits", con uno que esté de acuerdo conmigo ya seremos dos.
Publicado en 1995, 20 temas, carátulas y folleto completo con comentarios sobre los grupos.
Buena introducción para el buen mod pop.

The Revs - Do The Right Thing (7,1993)

Formed in the halcyon spring of 1988 The Revs were to go on to become one of England's greatest undiscovered gems. Hatched in the minds of Keith McAndrew and Jake Harding upon the demise of their former band, The Revs created a tight and passionate fan base for their catchy Mod influenced pop punk. Keith and Jake were soon joined by John Honeysett, son of Twickenham, and all round good egg. The three manboys pressed further into the recesses of their minds to discover and develop the means of world domination through 3 minute classics.
This young band of charming rogues began their quest and began to write instantly catchy, melodic masterpieces of post-modernist modernism. Their message began to seep out across the nation. Heavy touring secured them in the hearts and minds of audiences across the country. However, the dark and malignant cloud of record company disinterest hung over them from the beginning. The Revs have two EPs: Buzz and Elevater (1992), Vinyl Japan edited both in one CD. And this single,Do The Right Thing (three songs) edited by Detour Records in 1993, only 1500 copies.

Disco publicado en 1993 por Detour Records, tres temas. El primero Do the right thing con un ligero toque 90s, opinión personal pero no por ello deja de ser un estupendo tema, seguido por Stay in touch desde luego más mod y termina con Anna en plan más lentillo. Buen single que durante bastante tiempo pensé que era lo único publicado por ellos, hasta que gracias al amigo jllopez descubrí los dos anteriores EPs: Buzz y Elevater, publicados en un solo CD por Vinyl Japan en 1992. También en su página de myspace podéis encontrar tres temas más: Start it up, Little Terrors y una versión de The Kids are alright. Todo ello lo edité en un solo CD que más adelante publicaré en el blog.

The Aardvarks - Bargain (1995)

Band that needs no introduction to fans of Mod/60's influenced music, these guys have been popular on the circuit for a fair few years now, and they're '95 debut long-player doesn't disappoint."Bargain" showcases a band with excellent influences (The Small Faces, Beatles, Who, The Kinks - "Office No.1" and "Mr. Inertia", for example, remind me an awful lot of Ray Davies tunes), but also a band not afraid to give their sound a contemporary feel. Mixing Hammond organ with psych-guitar riffs, most of the tunes are up-tempo Mod-rockers - if you'll pardon the term, and any album that includes a tune called 'Arthur C.Clarke' must be good, musn't it? Strong and impressive debut album, and nice get-up on the cover-sleeve lads!

De nuevo nos encontramos ante un buen disco y de nuevo nos vemos con una banda que posiblemente debió tener mejor suerte.Conocí a los Aardvarks a través de sus singles con Screaming Apple (89 y 91), discográfica con la que debieron tener algún problema para la publicación de su LP ya que no fué editado hasta 1995 y por otro sello: Delerium Records coincidiendo con problemas en la banda. Posteriormente se editó otro single en Detour Records: Buttermilk Boy / Bad Clothes (1999). Entre los temas del disco aparece "Mr Inertia" cuya versión a manos de Mark Vark (Mark Pietronave) apareció hace tiempo por este blog.
Influencias mod por todos lados con un toque psycho agradable.El archivo es colaboración del amigo jllopez, aunque al tenerlo en vinilo lo he ripeado también.

SEARCHING....Helium Angel - Early Clue To The New Direction (1998)

I learned about Helium Angel many years ago, around 1999, maybe through mp3.com (when this web offered free songs) while searching Billy Bragg covers... I found Accident Waiting to Happen and a few more songs (18), little information about the band and a desire to get more (teehee). This is the reason why Helium Angel appears on this post: "Searching" ......... but now I can give you the fifteen songs from Early Clue To The New Direction plus eight more (some appear in recops like International Pop Overthrow vol 2 (December Song), vol 5 (Enjoy The Gravity), Pop Under The Surface vol 4 (Shakespeare)....).

I get CDs all the time from unsigned bands who have pooled all their resources to put out their own records. Most of the time, the results are quite predictable—poor sound and material that needs more work. So imagine my surprise when the opening chords of “The Crowd Appears” came blasting out of my stereo, and I suddenly felt a bit like the way those lucky punters must have felt standing around the beer-sodden pubs of 1977 London listening to a young Woking band, who married soulful mod pop to punk fury—The Jam.

Helium Angel are a young mod band from San Francisco, so correctly mod in fact, that they thank their local Vespa Club and their scooter suppliers in the liner notes. The influences are all right too—The Jam, The Who, The Small Faces. But like the Small Faces before them, Helium Angel clearly dig psychedelia too, though theirs seem to come mainly from the Byrd’s “Eight Miles High” school.

As the album wears on, you realize there’s not a lot of fury here, but then Helium Angel aren’t playing in the shadow of Thatcherism and the Sex Pistols either. There is plenty of self-assured, catchy and crunchy power pop (yes, crunchy can be good), played with the confidence and ability only earned through generous amounts of practice, live playing and, dammit, heart. The punkiest song on the block is “When the Plane Touched Down,” about equal parts Who and Buzzcocks. Here and there, Keith Moon-style drums surface, but then so do Beatlesque harmonies, and a slashing Pete Townshend-ish rhythm guitar. I bet these guys have done a few windmills on their guitars—at least in front of their mirrors. It all adds up to an exciting debut, that while it could use a bit more variety, clearly sets them up for a killer effort next
time.

Aunque esta sección (SEARCHING....) se refiere normalmente a búsquedas incompletas de grupos en la web, casi siempre suelo ofrecer un álbum completo a pesar de estar formado por canciones de diversa procedencia. Este es el caso de este grupo de Santa Bárbara, California (aunque es cierto que siguieron en NY y acabaron en San Francisco), grupo que descubrí allá por 1999 puede que buscando versiones de temas de Billy Bragg (me van las versiones, tengo algún Giga en mp3...) encontrando su "Accident Waiting To Happen", pero habiendo escuchado el tema "The Crowd Appears" me hizo pensar que algo me sonaba a "mod".... pues bueno, no me equivoqué, así que Helium Angel se unió a la lista de SEARCHING.
Reconozco que hasta ayer mismo no había conseguido recomponer su álbum "Early Clue To The New Direction", lo cual me alegró el día.

Como comentario tonto veo que los tres últimos post han aparecido en fecha 13. Buen número.

Poca información en la red, salvo lo comentado arriba y en iconofan que hay una especie de biografía.....

The Mondays - Fortune & Glory EP (1988)

Es posible que a muchos os suenen "Modest Proposal", grupo mod de Washington DC que apareció a mediados de los ochenta, con un single de dos temas: ""I've Seen Your Face Before" y "Nobody Says No"(1985) y un LP conocido como "Single Minded LP" en el 87. Los dos temas del single aparecieron en el recopilatorio "This is Mod Vol 6, The United States Of Mod" , "Do it for the movement" en un recopilatorio de Unicorn Records (Unicorn 3: Into the light,1988) y el tema "I've seen...." en un EP compartido de la serie "The Phase III Mod Bands" del mismo sello.
Todo esto comentado para espabilar a aquellos que deseen buscar algo de Modest Proposal. Bueno, me faltan los recopilatorios de Unicorn, todo llegará.
Buscando material de MP, me enteré de que tras el LP se cambiaron de nombre (no sé si con cambios en la formación, aunque el cantante sí es el mismo) a The Mondays, publicando el EP de cuatro temas "Fortune & Glory" en 1988 dentro de Unicorn Records. El sonido que tiene no es excesivamente bueno, es lo mejor que pude encontrar, pero nos dá una idea de como sonaban, que es de lo que se trata.
En el blog de "Mr Suave's Mod World" hay algo de información sobre Modest Proposal ( y aquí también) y el comentario de una posible reunión (2009) junto a otro grupo de la época: "The Reply" (All Good Things).
Otro comentario en "El Sonido de 1979", por supuesto.

The fist time I heard Purple it was a cassette, Small World 6 Track Demos - 1982. This cassette and another one, 9 Track Demo . 1981 were my only reference to this fantastic band. I ordered both by mail from Detour Records many years ago. This version featured for a long time on many of my compilations for friends or myself, until Detour edited the Slight Detour 80-85 CD.

Estupenda canción, seguramente la mejor del grupo o mejor dicho, la que tras una primera escucha se quedó grabada en mi mente como una de las mejores canciones de esos años 81 en adelante. Originalmente la tuve en casette, comprada a Detour en aquellos tiempos en que el cromo-ferro era el no va más aunque fue pasada a CD con sus limitaciones hasta que llegó de nuevo Detour y publicó en CD todo lo publicable de esta banda: Slight Detour
Una nueva escucha nunca está de menos.

Eurovox are a Mod group fron Mesa, Arizona, but if you didn't know this and heard the songs you could think that they come from England, they make Mod Power Pop that is reminiscent of the days of The Chords or.... I know this is a "cliche", but they sound great.

Pues ahora toca decir algo en un idioma bastante más cercano aunque no del todo dominado. Antes de escuchar a Eurovox reconozco haber tenido mis dudas. ¿Un grupo más que hace revival? ¿Serán de nuevo un grupo revelación que las revistas especializadas se empeñan en presentar cada dos por tres? ... tópicos aparte, quedé demasiado aturdido al escucharlos, a la vez que me sentí culpable por pensar cosas raras de estos chicos. ¡Simplemente me encantan! Canciones enérgicas, powerpó, donde aparecen esos pa pa papapa pa y aquellos la la la la que tanto me gustan (esto es una estupenda definición de la buena música...je).
Este trio de Mesa, Arizona, allí donde llevar un traje con elegancia debe de ser difícil tarea, publicaron este This is... en 2005, 12 canciones. En 2007 sacaron su segundo larga duración, Now! Here! This! dándonos más de lo mismo. En la parte de arriba he comentado dos enlaces hacia ModRadioUK y su página de MySpace donde revisan estos dos discos, en inglés, claro. Añado el comentario aparecido en Ritmo, Soul y Otros Modernismos, que casi se me olvida....
No pongo ningún link ya que el disco aparece también comentado en el blog amigo PowerPopOverdose y es allí adonde tienes que ir para encontrarlo.

VVAA - Mod World Vol 2 (personal recop 2008)

"Pequeña" recopilación de la (mi) serie Mod World. Fue realizada a finales del 2008 cuando muchos de los grupos que aparecen estaban empezando o eran difíciles de conseguir, la mayoría son canciones sueltas a distinto bitrate conseguidas por distintos medios, para variar. Grupos como The Madd , Anydays o The New Fidelity ya tienen discos circulando, está bien recordar a Brian Jones Was Murdered y The Risk, descubrir a The Boyce y The No-Goods junto a la nota mod-exotica de Workaholix desde Brasil. Las notas que aparecen a continuación son las que hice en su momento para 1PocodMusica con alguna varición.

Boyce : Grupo Japonés. Las canciones que aparecen no están completas, lo siento, pero creo que merece la pena tenerlas por ver lo que hicieron en su momento.Single "21st Century Modern Boys" y un EP "The Soundtrack for us". Su página web ha desaparecido, pero no desespero. Tras este comentario recibí el single, que añado para compensar.......
Brian Jones Was Murdered : USA, de lo mejor del "revival" mod californiano y seguramente de lo más desconocido. Activos del 92 al 98. Publicaron "Death of a Popstar!" en 1997 y el nombre del grupo indica claramente su devoción por Brian Jones.
The Anydays : Trio de UK con canciones resultonas y por supuesto con futuro. Las tres que aparecen aquí pertenecen a su primer single "Rollercoaster". Acaban de publicar el segundo (bueno, cuando se escribió esto por primera vez, alla por Dic 2008)
The No-Goods : De Holanda vienen y traen garage para variar.Están en activo desde 1999. Tenía pensado poner las cuatro canciones de su EP "lekkere beat", pero no tienen la calidad suficiente, así que seguro que también os haceís una idea con las que aparecen. Han publicado un montón de singles y EPs,así como tres larga duración.
Workaholix : Grupo de Brasil.En su página web podeís encontrar cantidad de archivos para escuchar-descargar (http://www.theworkaholix.com/). La calidad es baja, pero creo que unos Mods brasileños se merecen el aparecer aquí a pesar de ello.
The Risk : Se salen de la norma del siglo 21 ya que son de los 80s, grupo del que había oído hablar y no encontraba nada. Uno de sus miembros, Mark Le Gallez, formó en 2002 el grupo Thee Jenerators que aparecerá en algún volumen. Hace poco he conseguido su CD "legal" (sin portadas, que raro) del 2006, "Songs from the Big Tomato" y Detour ha publicado The Anthology. Estupenda la labor de recuperar grupos de este sello a pesar de rellenar a veces sus CDs.
The New Fidelity : Nuevos, de ayer, vamos. Mod Power Pop. Estupenda sorpresa la de este grupo de Long Beach, California que ya nos están alegrando el día con su CD "Tiny Slivers", me recuerdan a mis queridos Decibels. Tengo la teoría de que si hay tal cantidad de grupos Mod en California es por la herencia española, je je.Nuevo EP "All Here Now" 2009
The Madd : De Holanda también, garage soul. Son relativamente nuevos, el LP/CD "Ongeneeslijk Beat" es del 2007. La canción I´m Gone es de su EP "Are left Behind" del 2006.recientito su "Are Pretty Quick" del 2009. Grupo recomendable a seguir.

Aaaahh! los Dexys..... conocidos por todos, admirados, infravalorados, sobrevalorados... cualquier adjetivo que se te ocurra........De nuevo este es un post de colaboración ya que tras un comentario en el blog amigo Las Galletas De Maria al disco Too-Rye-Ay quedamos en que comentaría este. Así que si quieres el archivo o leer el comentario, te pasas por el blog y lo agradeces convenientemente. En el blog puedes encontrar si buscas con paciencia el Too-Rye-Ay comentado arriba y varias colaboraciones del amigo jllopez , que vaya si interesan: ODD NUMBERS. Nota: el aire del blog es setentero pero abierto a todo, como debe ser. Lo digo para que nadie se eche atrás al ver mucho Zappa, je.

Por otra parte y para compensar, como tengo una edición 20 anniversario del Searching.. y venía con un programilla interactivo donde se pueden ver dos vídeos (Geno y There There My Dear) junto a la posibilidad de escuchar los singles de su época EMI, pues voy y lo pongo en comentarios. Petra Haden - Sings The Who Sell Out (2005)

Pues seguimos con versiones, pero este es un disco un tanto especial. Petra Haden (hija del bajista de jazz Charlie Haden) multi-instrumentista, vocalista.... se marcó el detalle hacia 2005 de versionear el disco completo The Who Sell Out, y completo de verdad, todos los temas y los "jingles" radiofónicos que aparecían entre tema y tema, pero no son versiones digamos tradicionales, sino que todo el disco está sin un solo instrumento, todo a capella. Acompañada por un coro, que en la gira consiguiente a la publicación se llamaron "The Sell Outs", realizando todos los sonidos de los instrumentos.... bueno, el resultado dá para todo tipo de opiniones, pero para mí es un disco que me gusta escuchar de vez en cuando. Vosotros direís......

El resto de la procucción de Petra.... pues intenté acercarme un poco y en eso se quedó, en un intento.

VVAA - Four Bands EP (1993)

EP para cuatro bandas conocidas. Obtuve este disco en el Purple Weekend del año, que sé yo, lo único que recuerdo es que estaban actuando Lazy Sundays en la carpa...Pues bién, me llamaron la atención The Cliqué, aunque ya tenía su EP Early Years, pero al poco agradecí la presencia del resto de bandas ya que abrieron de nuevo más aún si cabe mis orejas hacia nuevos sonidos.
The Studio 68 interesan por no tener a "Hair!" incluída en su EP Smash!, ya publicado aquí. Mark Vark por tocar una demo de "Mr Inertia" que aparecería en el álbum de debut de su grupo The Aardvarks, Bargain (proximamente). The Nerve con su Living in the Sky coincidieron con mi total dedicación a Bronco Bullfrog y la rápida búsqueda de su material editado (Seeds from the electric garden 2001, donde no aparece este tema). Y bueno, The Cliqué con la colaboración de James Taylor en Leaving Here. Resumiendo, buen single para disfrutar.

El disco lo pillé en el stand del Fanzine "The Scene" en algún Purple Weekend mientras actuaban Lazy Sundays en la carpa, creo y fué editado por el sello alemán Security. En la parte de atrás viene un comentario de Barry Alchin (The Eyes) junto al mensaje; estos temas no están (ni lo estaràn) disponibles en CD. Bién por el vinilo.

Suelo ser perseguidor de aquella música que me gusta y The Shambles no se salvan,no. The Casbah es una sala de conciertos de San Diego, California, por la que han pasado todo tipo de grupos... que me llamen la atención: The Loons, Woggles.... y que además suele quedar constancia sonora de las actuaciones. Aquí tenemos 13 temas de una de mis bandas favoritas, caracterizada por la multitud de temas repartidos en todo tipo de formatos y que gracias a Snap! Records pudimos conseguirlos en algunos CDs, (recordando como siempre a este sello madrileño...).
Para variar no hay portadas originales, bueno si entendemos por originales las que suelo hacer, pues sí que tenemos..

Paralelamente a la serie "Mod World" comencé con esta otra también por 2008 y si se trata de sonido Hammond es por haber encontrado bastantes grupos dentro de este , digamos, estilo. La gran mayoría pertenecen a sellos como "Hammondbeat Records" y de nuevo el objetivo de este tipo de recopilaciones es el mismo: dar a conocer grupos o si ya son conocidos pues tenerlos recopilados de otra manera distinta a la tuya, je.

Los comentarios son más o menos los que hice en su momento, muchos grupos ya tienen nuevos discos en el mercado y varios estarán de gira por nuestro país en este momento o futuro. Posiblemente pueda poner alguna "referencia" en este blog, tipo a lo que hago con Detour... ya que me he visto comentado en algun post en Hammondbeat Records y paso de malos rollos.

The Diplomats Of Solid Sound : Quizás conocidos por si solos o porque provienen de "The Bent Scepters". De todas formas aquí aparecen en su auténtica expresión Hammond y Guitarra a partes iguales, se trata de canciones de su disco "Instrumental Action Soul". USA

The Yards : Aunque el logotipo de la banda y portadas recuerde a los Yardbirds no debe confundirte, de nuevo sonido hammond de un grupo que se crece en sus actuaciones en vivo.Del disco The Yards (remastered) 2002. USA
Sugarman Three : Ah... el boogaloo, Aquí aparece Saxo, el de Neal Sugarman. Se dedican a hacer Jazz, Soul, Boogaloo, Funk o como te dicen ellos : Dinamic Soul Sound. Activos desde 1996. Los temas son de su primer álbum, "Sugar's Boogaloo" de 1998. USA
The Link Quartet : La escena Italiana siempre ha tenido grandes seguidores de este tipo de música, mod jazz, easy listening, cocktail,temas para películas... y para mí los Link Quartet son de lo mejor a nivel internacional. Vienen actuando desde 1991 y los temas son de su disco "Italian Playboys" de 2003.
Big Boss Man : Desde 1998 vienen haciendo una mezcla entre hip hammond, pop 60s, R'n'B,Latin Soul y Funk...lo normal en estos casos.Los temas son de "Humanize" del 2001.UK
The New Mastersounds : Otra banda bastante activa y como casi todas las anteriores han venido de visita a nuestro país,cuarteto en activo desde 1999 ,los temas son de "This is What We Do" 2005. Atentos a su 102% del 2007. Son de Leeds .UK

The Walnut Dash son de Essex, publicaron unos tres singles creo que bajo el sello "Damage Goods" entre 2001 y 2003 y más tarde el sello "Vynil Japan" se encargó de reunir en este disco: los tres singles más lo que se supone iba a ser su cuarto, Titbits: The singles so far & then some..

Cada vez que descubro a un grupo como este (hace años...) me sigo preguntando el porqué de la poca repercusión que ha tenido, sonando tan bién como lo hacen. No sé nada de ellos desde 2004.
El disco es de sólo ocho temas y a mí se me hace corto. Temás con melodía ,estribillos contagiosos, como si fuesen los Odd Numbers ingleses (lo digo porque me suenan a ellos y eso es bueno...)

VVAA - The Unsung Heroes 1978-81

De todos debe ser conocida la buena labor del sello Unicorn Records hacia los grupos mod (y ska) de lo que ellos denominaron Phase II y III, publicando singles,EPs y álbumes de bandas como Risk, Modest Proposal (y The Mondays), The Key o Les Elite por nombrar los que creo menos "conocidos".
En esta recopilación del año 1994 nos encontramos con varios conocidos (o todos...) y otros no tanto más que nada por lo poco publicado de ellos como Back to Zero o Speedball, aunque posiblemente Detour Records pueda haber sacado algún CD de donde casi no hay, es decir: cuatro o cinco temas, otras tantas demos versiones y algun directo (con Speedball por ej.)

Lo más seguro es que este disco no os aporte nada nuevo, pero sirve para todos aquellos que estén empezando y busquen "otros grupos" mod entre lo denominado revival.

En el fanzine Redstar 73 o en flat19 he encontrado una buena referencia a lo publicado por Unicorn Records, entre todas sigo buscando algunas como Modest Proposal o las recopilaciones Unicorn One y Two.

Subtitled The Phase II Mod Collection, this skimpy 12-track collection offers a scattershot sampling of some of the bright spots in the mod-revival movement of the late '70s and extends into the tail-end of the movement in 1981. A nice addition for the rarities, though far from being a definitive look. (allmusic)

The Webstirs, banda formada en Chicago (USA) en los años 90 por el dúo de compositores Mark Winkler (teclados) y Preston Pisellini (guitarra), junto con Charlie Short (bajo) y Jordan Kozer (batería).Han grabado cuatro álbumes de larga duración "Smirk" (1994), "Rocket To The Moon" (1998), "Radio Racket" (2000) y "So Long" en 2009.

Winkler y Pisellini amigos desde la escuela primaria en Elmhurst (Illinois) comenzaron tocando y grabando como el grupo de pop experimental "Stamp Act" durante la década de los 80 en Champaign (Illinois), donde se reunieron con el que sería durante mucho tiempo su productor y colaborador Matt Allison. Más tarde tocaron en la banda de power-pop "Thrugmullians" antes de volver a Chicago en 1991.

The Webstirs se inició cuando el dúo contribuyó con un par de canciones a la compilación de 1992 "Chicago Underground Hits At Large" (Big Block Records) bajo el nombre de "The Web Stirs". Animados por la respuesta, el dúo se convirtió en cuarteto con la incorporación de Lil' Ed Schaller al bajo y Tim Samuel a la batería. En 1996 firmaron con Ginger Chicago Records y grabaron en edición limitada un vinilo de 7" "Gallaudet/Liberty Camp.

Russ Horvath batería de "Champaign Band Sarge" se unió a The Webstirs en 1997 para el segundo album "Rocket To The Moon", obteniendo éxito de crítica en publicaciones como Pop Culture Press, que la llamó "Una pequeña obra maestra". En 1999 la banda aportó la canción inédita "Tiny Star" a The International Pop Overthrow Vol.2 (Del-Fi Records). Pronto volvieron al estudio con Allison y lanzaron su tercer album "Radio Racket" en el año 2000.

Después de escribir, grabar y viajar juntos por más de una década, el grupo decidió tomarse una pausa en 2002, cuando Schaller regresó a Urbana y Horvath volvió a ejercer su carrera docente de arte. En los años siguientes, Winkler se asoció con Rich Sparks (Ginger Records) para formar Dad Factory. Pisellini siguió tocando con el batería Brad Elvis en The Elvis Brothers y Big Hello.

En 2005 Matt Allison convenció al dúo para colaborar en un nuevo álbum, con decenas de demos hechas en casa, volvieron al estudio con Schaller y el batería Heath Chappell para grabar el que sería su disco más ambicioso. Grabado poco a poco en los años siguientes, reclutaron a talentos como Jordan Kozer, que había tocado la batería en The Redwalls grupo mod de Chicago y al bajo a Charlie Short. El álbum "So Long" fue publicado en 2009 en el sello Ginger Records y marcó un nuevo comienzo.

The Prime Movers (UK) - We Live To Shine 7" 1993

Este fue el último single publicado por los Prime Movers, tras una serie de singles,12" y LPs como: Crystalline, The Sins Of The Fourfathers, Earth Church, Stroboscope y Arc. La cara A es de Fay Hallam y la B para Graham Day por aquel tiempo marido y mujer, así que compartiendo single. Cuando compré este single pensaba encontrar bastante de Prisoners, pero en una primera escucha me decepcionó un poco (sonido tirando a Hard nosequé), bien es cierto que con el tiempo y pasando de prejuicios he llegado a apreciar lo publicado por Prime Movers (The Sins... en especial). Todos conocemos las andanzas del amigo Graham Day: Solarflares, Buff Medways, Thee Mighty Caesars, Galoers.... pero los que más me llaman la atención son "Planet" y "Gift Horses", puede que por la dificultad de encontrar algo de ellos.

The Prime Movers are from Chatham, Kent, England and they formed in 1988, with Graham Day (Guitar/Vocals), Allan Crockford (Bass), Wolf Howard (Drums) and joining soon after Fay Hallam (Keyboards/Vocals). Their exciting '60s garage sound was very similar to that of The Prisoners. In 1989 they released their first EP "Crystalline" in 1989. Shortly followed by their first album "Sins Of The Fourfathers". They played many gigs in promoting their new material and were well attended by old and new fans. In 1991 they released the LP "Earth Church". Half the tracks on this album were written and sang by Graham and the remaining by Fay, who had equally remarkable lyrics. This was a thriving, more creative album, with attractive melodic songs. The whole album was a stormer. In 1992 after many more gigs, they released their second EP "Stroboscope", followed by their third and final album "Arc". Success was not on the horizon and in 1993 the single "We Live to Shine" was released on Little Teddy and later The Prime Movers split up. VVAA - Mod World Vol 1 (personal recop 2008)

Desde que tengo conciencia de usar el botón derecho del ratón sé que me dediqué a buscar información, temas, archivos de aquellos grupos que consideraba "mods". La mayoría de las veces encontraba canciones sueltas (ahora en myspace nos pasa lo mismo cuando un grupo empieza) y quedaba a la espera de conseguir éste o aquel disco..... Muchos de esos grupos publicaron discos, se consiguieron e incluso algunos han desaparecido ya, pero como gran amante de las recopilaciones no pude evitar la tentación de hacer las mías propias. Durante el año 2008 fuí publicando la serie "Mod World" (4 Vol) y "Mod Worl Hammond" (3 Vol) en la página de 1PocodMusica y puede que por emule anden. La intención era clara, dar a conocer grupos interesantes para mí y esa misma intención tengo ahora. Bueno, la mayoría de los grupos son ya suficientemente conocidos, pero alguno habrá que no y siempre nos queda el tener un recopilatorio que varie nuetra forma de escuchar los discos. Aunque la procedencia de los temas ha sido variada, he intentado unificar el sonido con mp3gain.
Mantengo los comentarios, más o menos, que hice en su momento:
MOD WORLD Vol 1:
The Miracle Men -- Canciones pertenecientes a su (primer) EP "Don't Hide Your Love", garage mod desde Holanda, país con variada representación en esta serie recopilatoria.Los grupos "Mod" holandeses parecen decantarse hacia el garage. Sin duda esta es una de mis bandas favoritas a la hora de seguir toda su trayectoria.Han publicado el CD "They Are Coming...." detrás estoy.
Smodati - Representantes de Italia, junto con Statuto, Made.... Son de Milán y elegantes, por supuesto. Se han decantado hacia el Ska punk, pero ahi están. Circula por el emule su discographia completa. Aquí con 3 canciones.
The Waistcoats : Holanda. fantásticos. Las canciones son de su disco "Stark Raving Mod" del 2000, han pasado por épocas de surf, beat... y sus discos aparecen por algún famoso blog en diciembre 2007.Este disco lo tengo bajado "Legal" sin portadas de la web,hay varias versiones, como Can't Explain de los Who y Sookie Sookie de Don Covay
The Insomniacs : De New Jersey (USA) .Absolutamente recomendables. Los 3 temas, pertenecen a un concierto del año 2005, Live at Maxwell's también "legal". No confundir con un nuevo grupo de Blues del mismo nombre. Mike Sin (the Insomniacs) junto con Stu Rutherford (the Creatures of the Golden Dawn) han formado : The Royal Purple", psycodelia pop. Ya escucharemos algo de ellos.
Golden Green -- Grupo de Bélgica, activos desde el 99. Los temas pertenecen a singles, han publicado bastantes.Tienen dos larga duración: Modbeats (2002) y Sweet Soul Revue (2005). Sólo tengo canciones sueltas, sorry.
PHY -- Japoneses. País donde hay cantidad de grupos Mods que imitan a la perfección la imagen y actitud Mod. Estos publicaron una serie de EPs con títulos tan indicativos como "PHY Generation" "PHY or Nothing" "Meet The PHY" más claro no puede estar.Su página web parece haber desaparecido y no soy capaz de encontrar nada de ellos en la red, pero al menos me quedan unas 10 canciones, menos es nada.
The Movement -- Grupo mod alemán (uuuppps, Danés) y totalmente comprometido con la lucha de clases, antifascistas de traje y corbata fina. Hacen canciones enérgicas de las que destacaría "A Little Rain"(Si conoces a Lukas Sherfey verás que esta es su línea). Publicaron Revolutionary Symphaties, creo que en el 2005.

The Babelain's - The Moon Says Nothing (single 60s?)

The Datson Four - See! (2001)

Los Canadienses "The Datson Four" empezaron como "The Datsons" publicando un disco con el mismo nombre, pero quizás pensando en que posiblemente fuesen confundidos con el grupo "The Datsuns"(Nueva Zelanda) , optaron por cambiarselo. En el 2000 sacaron este disco: See! con claras tendencias mod (aparte de ser mods, desde luego!!!), si la primera canción te suena a JAM, la segunda a WHO, la tercera de nuevo a JAM......... pero si ya me conoceís un poco esto NO me impresiona nada, si me gusta, me gusta. Portada con un ligero toque a la película "Blow Up", (bueno, eso pienso) Sonido powerpopero con Rickenbacker y en formato de trio que sigo escuchando de vez en cuando con renovada sorpresa. La escena canadiense siempre ha dado buenos grupos tanto en Garage como en Mod, entre lo último tengo algo de "Aceface" (¿?), je.

Tras este disco decidieron cambiar de nuevo de nombre a "The High Dials" llevando publicados tres discos (creo) hasta ahora :A New Devotion (2003) ,Fields in Glass EP (2004) ,War of the Wakening Phantoms (2005) en los que han derivando hacia sonidos más psicho-sesenteros, que para variar, me parece estupendo. Por ahí tengo los tres.......

Pero no espereís encontrarlo aquí....vaya. La verdad es que dando una de mis vueltas por los blogs amigos lo he visto en TWILIGHTZONE! , en versión 2006, creo y al pensar que es absolutamente recomendable os dirijo a su blog. Más info allí.

The Chemistry Set - Wake Up Sometime (1990)

Parece ser que nos encontramos ante uno de esos grupos de culto, de los que que pudieron ser pero que.....Siempre recuerdo a grupos como The Stairs, The La's, The Rain, The Real People.......... Pues bien, The Chemistry Set los descubrí seguramente a través de Detour o Elefant, no recuerdo, pero seguro que fué uno de esos discos que compras bien por algun comentario favorable o bien por la portada. En este caso la portada te trae impresiones psycho o al menos lisérgicas pero una vez escuchado te quedas con la satisfacción de que has hecho una buena compra. Estoy hablando del año 1990, en el que el sello español Romilard Records publicó este "EP" ó 12 pulgadas de 10 temas. Lo de quedarse como grupo de culto es que después de este disco se quedó pendiente la publicación de su segundo LP: "Sounds Like Painting" puede que esperando la llegada de un sello fuerte que se interesase por ellos. Este "no realizado" disco ha circulado por la red y no era difícil encontrarlo. Pues bién, quizás debido a este interés por varios blogs, The Chemistry Set se han vuelto a reunir y han grabado el mini-LP: Alchemy #101 producido en Barcelona y grabado en Londres.Merece la pena.

Veterans of the late 80s neo-psychedelic boom as a four piece, their music received regular airplay on John Peel’s show (Peel went as far as sending the band a hand-written fan letter), featured in the mainstream and underground music press and the band appeared on the late, legendary Tony Wilson’s BBC2 television show, “100%”. Este es el tercer single dentro de lo publicado por Detour. Dos estupendos temas de un cuarteto del que lo único que puedo decir es que eran de Londres, no es mucho..... Bueno y que siendo la fecha 1993 no confundiremos con "The Directions" de hacia 1978-1981.
El single lo conseguí a través de Elefant Records y posiblemente sea uno de los causantes de mi pequeña colección de singles. Si alguien tiene más información, se agradecerá como se merece.

The Corrigans - Shake CDs (2008)

The Corrigans nacen en Zaragoza en el 2007, tras una maketa grabada en estudio en directo, empiezan los conciertos teloneando entre otros a Sex Museum, Chest...tocando con los tambien zaragozanos Shepherd's Bush, The Faith keepers, the magnetophones..Mientras graban este cd single de los cuales el tema principal Shake aparece en el el Recopilatorio de Bip Bip records "Somos los mods vol.2". Ahora esperan entrar a grabar y autoeditar un ep en vinilo con 4 canciones. Para los maños, el 19 de diciembre actuan en la conocida sala zaragozana La Lata De Bombillas junto a Cool Frog.

VVAA - We Are The Mods Vol 2 (year?)

Recopilación de varios grupos Mod, finales 70s seguramente. No sé con exactitud la fecha de publicación de este vinilo, ya que la información que viene es nula, además en los sellos o galletas no aparece nada ,incluso la lista de grupos que aparecen en el disco vienen en una pegatina añadida a la portada trasera...... Las bandas : Directions (2) Small Hours, Speedball, The Onlookers (2), Back To Zero (2), Small World (2), The Killermeters ,The Cigarettes, The Nips, The Lambrettas, Terry Tonik, The Jam y The Mods. También vereís que la confección de las portadas es tirando a artesanal, tipo modzine 80s, así que os vais haciendo una idea de lo que vais a encontrar cuando escucheís los temas........ Pero si eres de los que valoras más lo raro que tienes entre manos que lo raro del sonido, este disco no te va a defraudar. Bien es cierto que cuando salió no existían todavía las recopilaciones de Detour, de casi todos los grupos de este disco, así que en su momento fué una joya.... y lo sigue siendo, ya que a ver quien es el listo que lo reedita en CD o LP y a ser posible con precio en Libras, je.
El sonido es.... no es bueno. Recuerdo aquellos tiempos en los que el pasarse cintas o cassettes entre amigos, grabar vinilos con ilusión e incluso grabar de cinta a cinta era lo normal y "última tecnología", aunque no importaba demasiado la calidad, ni el dolby, ni si la cinta era de Ferro o de Cromo.... así que eso es lo que os vais a encontrar (en varias canciones se nota el siseo de la cinta, que ilusión!!!!) Pero no asustarse, escuchar primero los temas interpretados por Lambrettas y The Jam y seguro que el resto os suenan de maravilla.
Así que después de pasar al ordenador este vinilo no es de estrañar que ande metido en recuperar cintas de conciertos de Back To Zero, Prisoners y Direct Hits o The Chords....
El comentario en inglés es el único que he encontrado, no me apetecía traducir todo esto.

An odds and ends collection of unreleased demo and live tracks. Overall not very exciting. A few good tracks - Cigarettes, Killermeters (now available on their compilation CD), Small World, Terry Tonik (this is from a 7", its also on the 100% British Mod CD). The Jam song is a cover and the sound is complete crap. There is a Volume 1 which I never did get. They must have put all good stuff there, leaving the leftovers for this one. There is also zero information about the bands, save some newspaper clippings on the back cover.(International Punk Compilations).

Rare second release in this series that features un-released tracks by The Directions, Small Hours, Speedball, Back to Zero etc.... Only 1000 copies pressed ans comes in a full colour ultra mod sleeve (Detour Records).

The Stairs - Mary Joanna EP (1992)

Segundo EP, del año 1992 y que junto con el tercero repiten la misma estructura en cuanto a temas, cuatro. "Mary Joanna" aparece en el LP "Mexican R'n'B", "Mad Song" la firma también Jones, una versión: "I Can Only Give You Everything" y el último tema "Squashed Tomato Soup" de McDaniel. Siguen decantándose por el sonido mono y la producción de Peg Majoly.

Edgar Jones es un tipo que no deja de sorprenderme, tras su aventura con The Joneses y acercamiento al Doo Wap o jazz o soul acaba de formar otra banda "Free Peace" en la que se ve claramente que va de sonidos a lo "Led Zeppelin" y con la que han teloneado a Oasis. Bien. Si quereís verlo-oirlo, os acercaís a su página de myspace.

Mary Joanna is an ep released in 1992 by The Stairs. As with other Stairs releases, it was issued in several formats: cd single, 7" vinyl, and 12" vinyl. The 7" vinyl release came with Stairtex Record Cleaner enclosed, supposedly a cd cleaner on one side, and a vinyl record cleaner on the other. The cleaner was actually a piece of sandpaper, the coarse side of which was supposed to be used to 'clean' cds. (wikipedia)

The Shreds - Brutally You (7" ,1995)

Otro single publicado por Detour Records. The Shreds se alejan un poco de lo que consideramos "mod" acercándose hacia el pop punk en la línea de "Senseless Things" o con aires a The Gain, pero el Fred Perry que lleva el guitarrista Russ me dá que pensar...... Creo que sólo llegaron a publicar este single y varias canciones sueltas en recopilatorios diversos. Podeís escuchar "Things I've Said" y otras tres más en su página de myspace . De ahí está sacado el siguiente comentario en inglés.

The Shreds were formed in 1991 in the darkest depths of Lincolnshire. Heavily inspired by the Senseless Things and the thriving scene of UK pop/punk bands that were around at the time they recorded a shitload of demos over the years but actually released very little!! They did manage to get out and play shows all over the country though and got to play with great bands like Lovejunk, Funbug, The Revs, Goober Patrol and many more.The original line-up of the band was Russ, Austin and Martin. At some point they roped in Bruce to join to play lead guitar who was later replaced by Matt. When Martin decided to leave, Russ swapped from guitar to drums and the band carried on for a couple of years with that line-up before splitting up. (myspace)

SEARCHING.....The Keepers - The Keepers (2002)

The Keepers son de Belfast y llevan en activo desde.....2000, digo yo. Si aparecen en la sección "Searching" no es por estar buscándolos, ya que tras muchos años dando tumbos por la red me he hecho con sus dos LPs y canciones suficientes para llenar algún CD más, pero eso sí, a base de canciones sueltas, distinto bitrate, grabadas directamente..... la calidad no es la más alta pero si no conoces a este grupo, (para mí de lo mejor mod de muuuucho tiempo), te va a dar una idea de la calidad que tienen y si ya los conoces y tienes además algún disco de ellos, no sé a que estás esperando para compartirlo. Je!. Las canciones que contiene el archivo creo que pertenecen todas a su primer LP, o al menos así venían en su ya desaparecida página web, conteniendo temas propios junto con versiones como "The Seeker" de los Who ó "Weed Bus" de los Stairs. The Keepers apostaron por una distribución propia de sus discos (Vibrator) y puede que debido a ello sea difícil encontrarlos: Dos EPs, singles y los dos LPs "The Keepers" y "Rock'n'Roll From The Lagan Delta". They are not doing it as revisionists or a Sha-Na-Na kind of tribute. They are actually like that. They write their own material and they do strange arangements of songs from that time, and it's though there's never been a Celine Dion, or there's never been a Tom Cruise, there's never been a Bradd Pitt or a Britney Spears, when you talk to them or hear their music. The Shambles - (We've Got A) Groovy Thing 7" (1995)

Pues ya iba siendo hora que apareciese por aquí algo de los Shambles....... Continuación natural de Manual Scan con el trio fijo de Bart Mendoza, Kevin Ring y Mark Z y una sucesión de baterías, The Shambles han seguido haciendo haciendo estupendas melodías que nos pueden alegrar el dia. Este single lo publicó Detour en 1995 con tres temas, siendo el principal una versión de Paul Simon de 1966. Por cierto, hablando de versiones, The Shambles se caracterizan por tener publicados bajo todo tipo de formatos multitud de canciones y versiones en recopilatorios, simgles, maxis....., hace poco conseguí en un blog amigo el disco "20 Explosive Hits" con 22 versiones de muy diversos artistas pero en el que no aparece el tema (We've Got A) Groovy Thing de este single. Acompañandole vienen una versión alternativa de "Nothing Can Be Everything" y el tema de la banda sonora "A Girl To Kill For".
El sello madrileño Snap!! publicó un par de CDs allá por el 2000, What You're Missing, y en 1996 el fantástico Clouds All Day. Aprovecho el comentario sobre Snap!! para decir que se le echa de menos y esperar que pronto vuelva a la carga........... Aparte del comentado "20 Explosive Hits", es este año, mayo creo, se publicó "Desde Ayer" con demos y outtakes, buen comentario en el blog modgeneration. Pyramidiacs - I Can't Hide (1998)

Estupenda canción que abre el disco "Teenage Complications" de 1998 de los Pyramidiacs, grupo australiano desde luego muy conocido y querido por aquí. Pyramidiacs tienen varios discos publicados por un par de sellos españoles, como el "Teeter Totter", 1996 en Ranezz Records o los traidos o editados por Rock Indiana: "Nobody's Fool","Teenage Complications" y el recopilatorio "Stuff 'n' Junk" y hasta hace poco estaban a un precio fantástico en la página de Indiana, cincoeuros.com (que recomiendo por la estupenda iniciativa en cuanto a catálogo y precios). La canción "I Can't Hide" es de esas que se meten en la cabeza y no se van, sorprendiéndote silbandola en la ducha.............

Fantastic Power Pop band from Australia, this song I Can't Hide is from their third full lenght album, Teenage Complications (Anyhow) ,September 1998, just in time for their third tour of Spain. Dave Baisa es el guitarrista y compositor del grupo "The Odd Numbers", uno de mis favoritos Californianos. Por eso está dentro de mis búsquedas por la red y si a eso juntamos que todavía me queda la sana costumbre de bajarme canciones sueltas, vídeos o fotos y con el tiempo convertirlo todo a un CD, no es de estrañar que al encontrar un montón de vídeos los haya pasado a audio y aquí tenemos el resultado. Durante el año 2008, Dave Baisa se dedicó a subir vídeos de canciones propias y versiones en plan acústico bajo el nombre de bizetv (o Baisa TV). El sonido no es perfecto, pero suficiente para cualquier fan de los Odd Numbers, a mí desde luego me encanta el mundo de las versiones y así veo este CD. 22 temas con portadas modymade.

The Apemen - Phantacity (1996)

The Apemen ya habían grabado con Detour Records participando en la primera referencia (larga duracion) del sello, "Shout & Scream" junto a Thee Cherylinas y Clique en el 95 con cinco temas. Antes ya habían grabado el single "I Got Soul" que aparece por ahí abajo y "Love Train" en el 94. Los dos temas de este último single aparecen en este Phantacity y de regalo añadí en su momento el tema "I Got Soul". Desde luego un buen disco el que nos dejaron este cuarteto elegante alemán. Proximamente aparecerán en el archivo Saarbrucken.

A mí me encantan The Gain, y siempre que los escucho me dá por pensar qué es lo que entendemos por música mod, ya que como paso totalmente de posiciones puristas creo que aparte de que el grupo tenga pinta mod, actitud mod y vayan en vespa o lambretta a los grupos los hacemos mod nosotros. Este trío californiano hacen Punk-Mod (¿no es eso lo que hacía The Jam en In The City?, je) y este es el primer single que subo de ellos que como veís por su título hace referencia a "Quadrophenia" y "Suburbia"...., ya llegará otro single "you should know", el CD "Sing Ready Steady Smash" y el Recopilatorio "A B C D & E". Me falta de conseguir el "Live" Highway to Heck 10" y algún single en solitario o compartido.

The Gain were (are) a punk mod power trio from California. There are very good bands from this site, Odd Numbers, Shambles........They were active from 1990 (92) to 1998 but I think they had a reunion in 2008. The Gain edited a couple of singles with other bands, singles, the LP Sing Ready Steady Smash, Live, Highway to Heck 10 and the recop A B C D & E. I will upload some of them.

Todos hemos hecho discos recopilatorios, para los amigos, para impresionar, para uno mismo..... Este responde en especial a una petición o sugerencia que me hizo el amigo Fuzzface en la página 1PocodMusica tras una serie de discos sobre grupos "mod" (world) de ahora y otros de sonido hammond. Se subió a la página PieldToro por dedicarse a todo estilo Nacional. Le tengo especial cariño, ya que supuso una búsqueda de grupos y archivos durante algún tiempo, descubriendo a algunos, recordando a otros..... aprendiendo en blogs como "El Sonido de 1979" (algún comentario esta condensado de ahi...) y encontrándome con los estupendos recopilatorios "Moderno Pero.... Español" del sello Bon Vivant (algun tema está sacado de ahí....) que recomiendo ya mismo, eso si que son recopilatorios y no este!!!!.
El sonido se igualó con MP3 Gain (thanks rocky), hay librillo interior con comentarios y la procedencia de los archivos es de lo más variada e inconfesable. Las portadas: modymade.

Hace tiempo me dediqué a realizar CDs recopilatorios con esas canciones que en un momento dado habían significado algo para mí, no sólo las grababa sino que también las comentaba ... la serie se llamó "mystory" y lo dejé por el volumen 18....... Así que aprovechando que la mayoría de blogs están de vacaciones y con el ánimo de rellenar los huecos entre archivos, pondré algunas de esas canciones. No teneís porqué estar de acuerdo con que sea la mejor canción del grupo, pero es la que a mí me dice más. Comentarios, los que querais.

The direct Hits realizaron esta canción en el año 1982, aunque fué reeditada más tarde. La conocí por un recopilatorio de "Tangerine Records", Come On Peel The Noise, y por lo que veo no fué publicada en ninguno de los dos álbumes: Blow Up y House Of Secrets, pero sí en el recopilatorio "The Magic Attic" de Tangerine, donde aparece también la cara B de el single, "Sunny Honey Girl".

Kickstart - Bocion Goes On EP (1995)

Volvemos a Detour. Y lo hacemos con un EP de cuatro temas del grupo Italiano Kickstart, amante de las scooters y del que no voy a poder decir mucho más. El disco se publicó en 1995 y lo conseguí a través de las ofertas que hacía Detour sobre discos sin portada, con funda de papel, y en todos estos años no he sido capaz de encontrarla. También publicaron otro EP (de nuevo 4 canciones) en el mismo sello: "That's All Right" en 1997 y no tengo constancia de más. El sonido me recuerda a los Purple Hearts, pero pienso que es de lo mejorcito que he escuchado dentro de la amplia escena Italiana: Made, Minivip, Smodati, Statuto......... grupos que habrá que recordar.

A menudo suelo buscar por la web algún grupo del que he oido hablar o leido un buen comentario sobre él en los estupendos blogs informativos-mod que conocemos (léase Ritmo,Soul y Otros Modernismos o El Sonido de 1979! , modculture y otros....) Normalmente encuentro algo de ese grupo bien en blogs o emule, pero a veces, muchas, es dificil hallar archivos completos, teniéndome que conformar con canciones sueltas y a un bitrate bastante variable..... Por eso surge esta sección: "Buscando a" (en inglés queda como más internacional) con la intención de dar a conocer esas canciones (por suponer que la mayoría estaís como yo), comentar algo sobre el grupo, direccionar hacia otros blogs y además con la esperanza de que algún usuario de este blog posea material, valioso, del grupo en cuestión y se anime a compartirlo, je. Así que empezamos:
(Thee Mighty) Uptight se formaron en Leeds y estuvieron activos entre 1988 y 2004 publicando varios EPs (supongo que autopublicados) de los que no tengo constancia (carátulas). Recuerdo haber visto su página web hace tiempo, ya no existe, de la que seguramente saqué algunas de las canciones que tengo de ellos. Por lo que sé, inicialmente se llamaban "Uptight", pero al existir un grupo australiano con el mismo nombre, debieron cambiarlo. Los componentes :

Tras la disolución en 2004, siguieron en distintas bandas de las que se supone que tendreís más conocimiento. Simon y Daz formaron "The Lies" (myspace) orientados hacia el garage punk soul, Los otros dos miembros, Magus y Travis, crearon a "Freebooting Profiteers" (myspace) tirando hacia el power pop y reconvirtiéndose en "The Ace" añadiendose un miembro de "The Lost 45s" y el batería Daz de nuevo (myspace) (Ritmo,Soul y Otros Modernismos). Desde luego buenos grupos para buscar.

In this section: SEARCHING... I only intend to give you some info and some songs about groups that I could not get complete archives of (singles,EP,LP..) and of course I'm searching now.

(Thee Mighty) Uptight: Noisy chaotic bunch of mod-garage goons from Leeds, who had a good laugh and blasted out some tunes. The band were active between 1998-2004, and cleared many a room with their incredibly loud mod/garage, guitar trashing drum smashing sounds.
'(Thee Mighty) Uptight' initially split into two bands, with Daz and Si forming garage punk soul band 'The Lies'; Jonny and Travis disembarked to form power-pop act 'Freebooting Profiteers'. Over the next couple of years both bands gigged and recorded. 'Freebooting Profiteers' eventually evolved into 'The Ace', with a more direct power-pop sound. 'The Ace' has had a recent line-up shuffle, and by happy synchronicity, the dynamic drumming loon Dynamite Daz is back playing with Jonny and Travis. The Lies went on a hiatus a while ago, so Si decided to stride forth with his eccentric indie skiffle electronica folk punk pop band, 'The Grizzly Bare Band', where you'll get mandolins, oscillating keyboard FXs and a double bass, all doing battle with rocking drums, distorted guitars and a xylophone. Until Daz joined The Ace, the dynamite man has been bumming around, helping out on drums for his various mates covers bands, an indie band (I need to check out the name of the band), as well as jamming in a heavy two –piece band. Paolo Apollo Negri - Applecore (2007)

Cuando suelo escribir un comentario como este, tiendo a dar por supuesto que la mayoría conoceís al grupo o solista del que hablo..... je. Paolo Apollo Negri es un personaje bastante conocido dentro del mundo Hammond o más concretamente del sello Hammondbeat. Puede que ya se le conozca por pertenecer a uno de los mejores grupos del sello, los "Link Quartet" y por aparecer como miembro permanente dentro de otros grupos como: Wicked Minds , Modulo 5 , Low Fidelity Jet Set Orchestra , Fred Leslie's Missing Link (que como indica su nombre está formado por miembros de Phat Fred, Leslie Overdrive y Link Quartet) y alguno que me olvido. Lo que está claro es que se mueve estupendamente entre el funk, jazz, bossa, groove, lounge y otros varios que se te ocurran. "Applecore" EP pienso que se publicó hacia finales del 2006 o en 2007 siendo el primer disco en solitario de Paolo y dando una vez realizado la idea de crear un disco con la colaboración de la mayoría de sus amigos de Hammondbeat (Leslie Overdrive, Nick Rossi Set, Phat Fred, and The Link Quartet) y demás como New Mastersounds, Diplomats Of Solid Sound , Stoned Soul Picnic, Big Boss Man, Speaklow, Montefiori Cocktail, Gene Drayton Unit, The Five Aces.... El disco en cuestión es "A Bigger Tomorrow" del que ya hablaremos. Los temas de este EP aparecen en dicho larga duración, pero en distinta versión.

Este es el segundo LP ,publicado por Detour en 1997 ,del quinteto The Acrylic Tones. Siempre me ha gustado ver la diversidad de estilos musicales que se dieron en los discos publicados en los 90 por Detour : Shreds, Revs, Buzz, Apemen, Aim, Sharp Kiddies, Now!, Itch, Direction, Clique.... acercándose al power pop, punk, pop y al sonido hammond, claro. The Acrylic Tones estarán más en la línea de Cliqué que el resto, con ese órgano de Simon Balsillie que aunque no sature los temas, siempre está presente, sobre todo en los temas instrumentales. Un buen disco, siempre presente en mis escuchas.

Otro disco con una portada que lo dice todo.... y en este caso es verdad. The Q son un cuarteto mod de Gloucestershire y que en 2008 me sorprendieron con este EP de cuatro canciones ( o single de doble cara A). Lo cierto es que si me he de quedar con una, esta será "Interlude" por lo que tiene de Himno y por un cierto recuerdo hacia "Gene" (que me gustan, claro), pero son cuatro temas que nos avisan de lo que podrá dar su disco de larga duración cuando llegue. Grupo totalmente recomendable.

Además, si aparecen aquí es también por haber descubierto hace un par de días unos cuantos temas de ellos en esta página , (de Facebook, que está de moda, oyes), 13 temas con nuevas versiones de este EP, temas en vivo, versiones y alguno que se supone nuevo. Se pueden escuchar, pero los ansiosos pueden pedirme el archivo completo en mp3.....

En lo primero que me fijé de este disco fue en su portada, la foto y el título me llevaban a pensar en algo "mod", sin conocer nada de ellos, claro. The Shivers son un cuarteto de Illinois, que tiene entre sus miembros a un inglés, Royston Lloyd y que facturan un pop con aires sixties, power pop y algún toque de psycho. El disco se escucha estupendamente aunque puede que se os quede un poco corto, nueve temas (8) (debido a esto lo tenía grabado junto a los "Walnut Dash" y su Tilbits de pocos temas también).

The Shivers are a band that formed in 2001 in Indianapolis and were formed by Englishman, Royston Lloyd. The band played their first show in January of 2002. Currently, they are known as purveyors of 60's influenced garage-freakbeat-rock music. The Shivers were inspired by many bands of the 60's and 70's, such as The Small Faces, The Pretty Things, The Sorrows and the Mysterians, The Action and The Buzzcocks. However, in their earliest incarnation they had leanings that were more of the brit-pop variety. Known in the midwest of the USA as a band that performs catchy, exciting songs with much exuberance.

En 1995 Detour Rercords publicó este single de dos temas a un grupo que venía del otro lado del Atlántico, de San José, California. Zona en la que desde luego siempre hay buenos grupos mod.
The Odd Numbers entraron en mi vida gracias a este single y la estupenda canción "The Easy Life" y ya no han salido...... Tanto me gustaron que los consideré como la continuación natural del "Grupo Mod" en los 90, una de mis viejas camisetas lo puede atestiguar, je:

El poner este single tiene sus razones, por él mismo y por empezar la saga "The Odd Numbers", además de alguna sorpresa que estoy preparando sobre Dave Baisa. Aunque la verdad es que ultimamente parece que muchos blogs se han apuntado a lo "MOD" y seguramente encontrareís casi todo lo publicado por ellos sin problemas (o preguntar, claro) , de eso se trata también, de que se conozca y divulgue la buena música. Los dos temas del single aparecen en el LP "A Guide To Modern Living".

De nuevo un grupo que va ganando puntos escucha tras escucha. No sé mucho de ellos, salvo que aparte de este disco publicado por Detour Records tienen un single en el mismo sello, que suena bien la voz del cantante y sobre todo ese órgano que aparece en todos los temas, no tienes más que escuchar el primer tema, con inicio de pélicula 60s, para imaginar lo que vendrá después, pero mezclado con toques de pop-punk, R&B-Soul....... Como curiosidad aparecen "jingles" o pequeños trozos musicales entre canción y canción, en plan "The Who Sell Out". Si alguien tiene información........

De todos los singles o EPs en el sello DETOUR de esos primeros 90s, posiblemente éste sea mi preferido. Un debut prometedor que dá la impresión de que quedó sólo en eso. Lamentablemente no he sido capaz de encontrar nada de ellos buscando por la red (desde luego si intentas buscar por "The Most" vas dado....), bien es cierto que aparecieron en el primer recopilatorio "Takin' A Detour" con un tema que he incluído en el archivo (A Piece Of The Action).
Me llamó la atención la voz del cantante, la música definida como "soul blanco, hipnótico y con garra" y sobre todo ese saxo que aparece en todos los temas. A por él.

Reconozco tener una pequeña deuda con estos australianos. Los conocí por escuchar algún tema en recopilatorios como "A Fever Comp vol 2" de Bip Bip o en "Takin' A Detour vol 2", luego busqué sus dos discos publicados y al escucharlos, quizás en un mal momento, no me llamaron la atención en una primera escucha. Más tarde y quizás más predispuesto , me he preguntado cómo he sido capaz de pasar de ellos. Espero que estando ya avisados no os pase lo mismo.

Hace poco he escuchado canciones de su último disco " Tavistock Street" (2008) y siguen igual de buenos, canciones fuertes, con ciertos toques psycho y algunas con un aire "country aussie" muy en la línea de otro gran grupo, desconocido?, australiano : "The Little Murders"

Dos buenas canciones de este estupendo grupo mod Alemán. Los conocí a través de el disco "Modstock , Saarbrucken '94" de Detour, un par de temas en vivo junto a varios más representantes de la escena mod de esos años, Jaybirds, Statuto, Clique, Aardvarks, Beat Set. Pero de ese disco ya hablaremos en su momento. Ya hablaremos también de otro single de Apemen, "Love Train" del 94 y de su larga duración "Phantacity" de 1996, estos ya con Detour Records.

THE APEMEN were founded in 1992 in saarbruecken/germany, but their music and looks can only be described as a 100% pure British mod. Although their music is deeply rooted in the style of early British R&B and Beat bands THE APEMEN are not stuck in the past. Amongst a few classic cover versions, their set mainly consists of their own musical compositions.

Over the past fifteen years, THE APEMEN have become one of the most exciting live acts on the European Mod and Sixties scene. Since 1994, THE APEMEN have released several records on the Detour label in London. Other APEMEN releases are to be found on various German, English and Japanese samplers.THE APEMEN have already added a nineties edge to the swinging sixties and are just about to catapult it into the next millennium and beyond.

The Stairs - Weed Bus EP (1991)

Volvemos una y otra vez a lo mismo: si este grupo hubiese salido en vez de en 1991 diez años más tarde, posiblemente hubiesen tenido el éxito que se merecían, o bien: grupo incomprendido inexplicablemente en su época, o bien: ¿que hacían unos tíos vestidos así, tocando R&B, psych-garage con una voz solista que sería la envidia de Mick Jagger, mientras que en UK todo se rendía ante el empuje Madchester?. Pues eso
The Stairs es uno de mis grupos preferidos, me sorprendieron y lo siguen haciendo, vuelvo a ellos con regularidad. Editaron cuatro EPs y un LP (en mono!!) , Mexican R&B (1992), se disolvieron y con el tiempo han aparecido dos recopilaciones (conseguidas ya!!!) Right In The Back Of Your Mind y Who is this is (esta contiene lo que debía ser su segundo LP). Todo ello irá apareciendo según la respuesta y petición popular.
El personaje representativo de The Stairs fué, sin duda, la voz solista y compositora de Edgar (Jones) Summertyme que tras la disolucion del grupo formó "The Big Kids" con integrantes posteriores de "The Zutons" y "The Stand" , también ha continuado en solitario como Edgar 'Jones' Jones (and The Joneses), yéndose hacia terrenos más soul, jazz, doo-wap y resbaladizos varios.
Lo más normal es que si escuchaís "Weed Bus" quedeís enganchados a The Stairs.

The Stairs were truly one of the great long lost bands of the early nineties. The Liverpudlian four-piece love of retro pop formed the basis of a cool mix of psych and R'nB that promised so much but in the end delivered very little.
Not that the band were to blame. Far from it. In Edgar Summertyme they had a charismatic and colourful lead singer with a distinctive bluesy growl that put a prime Mick Jagger to shame and with an obsessive heart for attention to detail. They had the look and the cool to match. The seminal EP 'Weed Bus' is now a collectors item and the only album 'Mexican R'n'B' is packed with pop classics unashamedly ripped off left, right and centre from every obscure 60's band there ever was. Ya dije hace días que el sonido "hammond" tendría su hueco en este blog. Empezamos con este cuarteto Danés y su primer disco, un mini CD con siete (bueno, seis) temas. El grupo hace jazz, funk, soul.... hammond y sus integrantes no son nuevos en esto, aunque la formación es oficial desde 2005, ya curtidos en un montón de directos donde versionean lo que les apetece, desde a "Link Quartet", "Beatles" o "Jesucristo Superstar"..... Un par de esos directos los podeís bajar/escuchar aqui en formato de un solo archivo mp3. Ya tuve la paciencia de editar, separar y poner titulo a todos los temas.....
Leslie Overdrive pertenecen al sello discográfico "Hammondbeat", sello puntero en el sonido hammond con gente como Link Quartet, Captain Hammond, Paolo Apollo Negri, Phat Fred, The Yards, The Get Up, The Men From SPECTRE........ grupos que irán saliendo poco a poco, bueno, y los que me he olvidado....... Sigamos otro rato por el mundo del Garage. Grupo de Sacramento, California, que publicaron este su primer disco en el 2004, aunque ya llevaban bastante tiempo tocando en distintas bandas de la zona, como The Trouble Makers, Groovie Ghoulies, Schruggs..... Puede que no aportasen nada nuevo, garage tocado con energía sonando a Sonics, alguna versión.... pero que si me aportaron la alegría de escucharlos, de eso se trata. Si yo fuese mod, me gustarían, je.

Th' Losin Streaks are Matt, Stan, Mike and Tim. Tim sings, plays guitar and writes some of the songs. Stan plays the bass, sings backups and dances. Matt is the beat of the traps and also sings. Mike sings, plays better guitar, dances better, and writes some songs. Th' group formed in the summer of 2003 as a three piece-- Mike came along in September.
Between them the fellows have over forty years' experience playing what they call music.

Primera colaboración del amigo jllopez o JAM ,que son sus iniciales, un pequeño paréntesis para el garaje.

Grupo de Tucson (Arizona) formado en los 90's en el revival garage, The Resonars es Matt Rendon, que toca todos los instrumentos y escribe todos los temas del "grupo". Pop psicodélico con toques Byrds, Hollies y trallazos The Who.
Este es su tercer disco y para mi todo un descubrimiento.

The Resonars Lunar Kit's self-titled full-length is the type of record you hear on CD and want to get on vinyl. It's warm grooves and hip-shaking rhythms recall the old rock 'n' roll records you grew up on, as much about fun and dancing as it is about writing and performing great songs. It's the type of record you put on your turntable, blast into your ears via the headphones, and dance the night away while the party goes strong into the wee hours of the morning. However, on CD all is not lost because it is such a solid record, such a testament to the power of the influence of rock 'n' roll, recalling The Stones as much as it recalls Buddy Holly. Precioso single en vinilo amarillo que podríamos incluir dentro del Indie Power Pop, por decir algo. Este single lo descubrí a través de Elefant Records (como a tantos otros), se trata de una colaboración con el sello Brillant Records y que más tarde siguió con la publicación del Bedroom EP (1994) (proximamente). The Waking Hours siguen en activo como quinteto, pero para mí tienen dos etapas muy diferenciadas, la primera va de 1991 a 1994 como trio y es la que realmente me interesa. Canciones pop.
Grupo americano, Los Angeles, formado en 1991 por Tom Richards (guitar),Rob Clark (drums) y David Moore (bass). De esta su primera época se publicó un mini LP "The black & white album" que conseguí formarlo a base de canciones desperdigadas por la red y "The Early Years" que contiene lo publicado en sus primeros años.
Para mí un grupo que levanta el ánimo.

Otro grupo más que puede que sacase su disco en el momento equivocado, de esos tengo un montón..... Conocí a 5:30 por este disco, en 1991, pero lo cierto es que ya llevaban varios años por la escena Londinense. Lo curioso es que su bajista y compositor Tara Milton (junto a Paul Bassett) parecía bastante obsesionado con el sonido Jam, lo cual pudo llevarlos al olvido en los ochenta y tras pulir su sonido fueron fichados por algún cazatalentos del sonido Manchester. Y a eso es a lo que suena entre otras cosas más,claro. A mi me recuerdan a ratos a Birdland, pero cuando los escuché por primera vez los metí entre mis simpatías mod, sin saber nada de ellos. Publicaron un montón de EPs, al uso en la época, pero se separaron enseguida, las críticas no acompañaron demasiado y adiós. Tara Milton creo que anda con "The Nubiles" y Paul Basset con "Orange Deluxe", bueno, si eso es lo que pone en la reseña en inglés!!, si lo dice el Sutton, será verdad.

Este disco es de edición Alemana y trae doce temas. La publicación en USA traía tres temas más, ver comentarios.

Armed with jagged guitars and pounding drums, London, England's Five Thirty tried to puncture a hole in the dance-oriented U.K. music scene of the late '80s and early '90s. Formed by bassist Tara Milton and guitarist/vocalist Paul Bassett, Five Thirty recorded their first single, "Catcher in the Rye," in 1985. Originally performing in Oxford and Reading, Five Thirty moved to London and met drummer Phil Hopper. In 1990, the group was signed to East West. The band's Jam-like sound and incendiary gigs excited the critics. However, the masses were unmoved by the band's back-to-basics rock & roll. Although the track "Abstain" managed to squeeze into the Top 75, the follow-up "Air Conditioned Nightmare" was completely ignored outside of the British press. In 1991, Five Thirty released their debut album, Bed. But the timing was wrong. If Bed had appeared years later -- when '60s-styled English guitar rock without the club mixes was in favor -- it would've had a better chance of selling. Disillusioned by their lack of success, Five Thirty unleashed the frustration in their songs, yelling, "This song ain't exactly what we'd call money but we don't care," in "Hate Male." Manual Scan - The Lost Sessions EP 1989

A Manual Scan los conocí a través de The Shambles, buscando todo lo referido a ellos y sus ancestros, je. Época donde poder bajarse un mp3 era un triunfo pero sí que se podían encontrar singles y EPs como este. Manual Scan fueron durante los ochenta un (el) grupo mod de la escena Californiana, que tantas alegrías nos ha dado, "compitiendo" con los Tell Tale Hearts en buena armonía. En 1986 publicaron un LP en USA: One (o Down Lights 1988), del que no tengo conocimiento, pero en 1996 se publicaron dos recopilaciones casi en paralelo: "All Night Stand" de Get Hip y "Plan Of Action" de Snap Records con casi los mismos temas y diferentes portadas. Munster Records reeditó el single "Plan Of Action" en 2006. Ambas recopilaciones andan por la red, buscar.

The Lost Session tiene 4 temas que seguramente fueron desechados en la grabación de su primer disco y cuentan con la producción (y coros) de Paul Bevoir , lo de desechados sé que no suena muy bien, pero la calidad de los temas es excelente y sirvió para que tengamos este estupendo disco.

Manual Scan was formed in the early 1980s in San Diego, CA. The first lineup consisted of Bart Mendoza on vocals and guitar, Kevin Ring (later Kevin Donaker-Ring) on guitar and vocals, David Fleminger on bass, and Paul Kaufman on drums. Througout several lineups, the core of Mendoza and Ring remained, and Manual Scan was one of the premiere mod bands of the U.S. in the 1980s.
Releasing a string of singles beginning in 1981 and an album issued in both the U.S. and England in 1986, the band toured extensively throughout Califormia and Arizona as well as England (the 100 Club and the Marquee, among other venues) and Mexico. Mendoza and Ring are now members of the Shambles, along with Mark Z, formerly of the Crawdaddys.
Other members have included Paul Brewin (later in Drip tank, Uncle Joe's Big Ole driver); David Anderson (Trebels, Gravedigger V); Joel Kmak (Hitmakers, the Farmers, the Penetrators); Brad Wilkins; Rob Wilson; Bobby Allend; and Morgan Young; as well as guitarist Ritchie Rooster and saxophone player Joe Asaro.
A number of Manual Scan's recordings are available today: Manual Scan's U.S. "Best of" compilation, All Night Stand, is available from Get Hip Records (http://www.gethip.com/), as is the Lost Sessions vinyl EP. The Special AKA - In The Studio (1984)

Tras dos álbumes de estudio y el single "Ghost Town" se separaron The Specials. Tres de sus miembros pasaron a formar "The Fun Boy Three" mientras que Jerry Dammers intentó seguir con Special AKA (nombre utilizado al principio) sin sacarse de encima a Specials. En 1982 realizaron dos singles: The Boiler, figurando como Rhoda With The Special AKA:

Disco que cuenta la historia de una violación (así aparecía en la portada de la edición española) con problemas para radiarse en UK y según palabras de Jerry Dammers, canción para ser escuchada una sola vez. También en 1982 salió el single "Jungle Music" con Rico y bajo el nombre de Rico and The Special AKA:

Ambos singles han aparecido en varias recopilaciones, creo que en "The Two Tone Story" también, claro. Lo cierto es que la evolución que estaban tomando The Specials con temas como "Stereotypes" y sobre todo "Ghost Town" dá la impresión de seguir en este disco de 1984, disco en el que el nombre "In The Studio" hacía referencia a la no existencia de actuaciones en vivo como The Special AKA. Casi todos los temas del disco salieron previamente como single, temas como "Nelson Mandela" o "Bright Lights" suficientemente conocidos y alcanzando altos puestos en las listas británicas.

Voted by Record Mirror as the best album of the year, 'In The Studio's release was slightly tarnished by the fact that half the tracks were already available on singles that preceded it. It was a dark social commentary and despite being recorded over such a long period, sounded remarkably intact.
Described by Dammers as "an album of different traps warning people about them", he was justifiably pleased with the record, "This LP's a once in a lifetime thing, I love messing around in the studio, but unless I build my own, I'll never get the chance to do it again. Steve Cradock - Two acoustic songs BBC Radio2

No se trata del disco "The Kundalini Target" publicado no hace mucho. Sólo son dos canciones grabadas de un programa de Radio2 de la BBC.
Aunque de paso si que comento algo sobre el disco. Siempre he tenido a Steve Cradock como un tío discreto, nada estrella, me refiero que estando en OCS o con Paul Weller siempre le he visto como en un segundo plano, sin ese aura de number one, pero haciendo estupendamente lo que sabe hacer , tocar y componer, y es posible que este disco siga esa pauta. Se trata de canciones tranquilas, casi acústicas, en las que no aparecerá ese tema que rompa la línea del disco y aunque la primera impresión sea no muy favorable, la repetida escucha hace que entre bien, acaba gustando, hasta te quedan ganas de más.
Las dos canciones aparecen en el disco, pero aquí son totalmente acústicas : "The Apple" y "You Point Your Picture", buen complemento si quieres rellenar o eres buscador de "todo lo publicado de".

The Eddies - Twice Around The World (2008)

The Eddies son de California , clasificados como Power Pop/Mod, algo bastante común entre los grupos Mod y afines norteamericanos. Tras su primer disco "In The Sunshine" (2004) y una serie de apariciones en diversos recopilatorios ( entre ellos The Young Idea - A Pop Tribute to Anthony Meynell and Squire) se atreven con este disco formado exclusivamente de versiones. Versiones de grupos de los ochenta, quizás como vuelta a sus orígenes. El caso es que se trata de un disco interesante (pasando de tópicos como no me van los discos tributo o de versiones...) donde las canciones acaban con un tratamiento a lo Eddies, si no conoces las originales, pues perfecto. Versionean a conocidos como Times, Risk, Jetset, Manual Scan, Squire y otros menos como Chardon Square (aparecieron en This is Mod Vol 6 USA) y los australianos The Little Murders. Lo de menos conocidos lo pongo para darles más importancia ya que The Little Murders están entre mis grupos perseguidos por la red durante mucho tiempo, ya subiremos algunos EPs....... En principio eran 9 temas, pero se añadieron dos (repetidos) pero con la presencia vocal de Mark LeGallez (Risk) y de Rob Griffiths (Little Murders). En los comentarios pongo la lista completa con los grupos originales.

US powerpoppers The Eddies return with their second album 'Twice Around The World'. Unlike their debut this album is made up of all cover versions. It's a tricky business putting out albums full of cover versions, sometimes it can go horribly wrong (Weller's 'Studio 150' springs to mind). But I'm happy to say that The Eddies have got these cover versions spot on. Rather than straight forward carbon copies The Eddies have stamped their distinctive powerpop sound onto all the tracks.

The sleeve notes state that the album was made with - No keyboards, no synthesizers, no session musicians. So if you like good honest power pop with a splash of psychedelic colour then this is the album for you. (Bazza, Mod Radio UK)

The Acrylic Tones - Girl 7 (1994)

Primer single de este quinteto inglés de Newcastle para el sello Detour.Al escucharlo notareís enseguida la presencia del órgano Hammond (sobre todo en "The Theme From....") , lo cual me permite de paso declararme ferviente admirador de dicho sonido.Publicaron otro single y dos Larga Duración para el mismo sello ("The Acrylic Tones" 1995 y "Above The Streets And Houses" 1997), que por supuesto ya pondremos, pero los temas de este single no aparecen en ellos, lo cual le hace más interesante.

Ocean Colour Scene - B-Sides, Seasides and Freerides (vinyl 1997)

Es curioso que a veces un disco que parte como de relleno, caras B, rarezas, puede llegar a ser uno de tus favoritos y más escuchados. Ya apunté hace poco mi preferencia hacia las canciones melódicas de OCS y este disco en su mayoría va de eso. Temas como "Huckleberry Grove" , "The Day we Caught The Train" , "Chelsea Walk", "Outside of a Circle" hacen que al escucharlas algo me sube desde el pecho hasta la garganta..... me encanta y puede que sea la edad... je. Este disco salío hacia 1997 en vinilo doble, cuatro canciones por cara y con libreto interior, más bien libro por el tamaño, con portada distinta a la del CD,"This Machine Kills The Enemy" (supongo que haciendo referencia a la parecida de Woody Guthrie "This Machine Kills Fascists"). Escaneado al completo, casi merece la pena conseguirlo por eso. (a los amantes del vinilo ripeado ya los tengo....)

Rounding up all the B-sides, demos and rarities Ocean Colour Scene released over the course of 1996, when the band was riding the crest of their popularity, B-Sides: Seasides & Freerides, for all its inconsistency, illustrates the depth of their ambition, as well as their flaws. Primarily comprised of acoustic material, including a demo of "The Circle" and a fine, stripped-down version of "The Day We Caught the Train," the 16 tracks on B-Sides can tend to sound a little samey, but when the group branches out to the neo-prog-rock of the very English "Huckleberry Grove" or to the funky instrumental "Chicken Bones and Stones," they sound better than ever, and a couple of early songs by the pre-Ocean Colour Scene band the Fanatics are interesting. Still, about half of the songs suggest that OCS may be a little too reverent in their appreciation for late-'60s rock, since they come across as only stylistic exercise, not full songs. And their live cover of "Day Tripper," featuring Noel Gallagher on guitar and Liam Gallagher on vocals, is an embarassment, simply because Liam's restrained vocals slay Simon Fowler's bellowing. But this is an isolated moment on B-Sides: Seasides & Freerides, since it contains enough first-rate material to make it necessary for dedicated fans. All Music Guide

Cooper - Dias De Cine EP (Digipack 2006)

Para mí, Cooper es de lo mejor que tenemos en el panorama musical español ( de lo mejor, es para dejar abiertas otras opciones a los que no estén de acuerdo...) buenas letras, sonidos impecables y lo más importante: canto sus canciones al escucharlas, je. En los últimos tiempos Cooper se ha dedicado a publicar discos singles o EPs, prefiriéndolos al formato de larga duración, con mayor o menor intervalo de tiempo tras la edición de "Fonorama". La primera tanda de singles se recopiló en el disco "Retrovisor" y este que nos ocupa pertenece a "Aeropuerto" de reciente publicación. Este EP está dedicado al mundo del cine, los tres temas en castellano nombran títulos de películas y el cuarto, versión de Gigolo Aunts.

Dan Dare - Heavenmetal EP (1993)

Al comenzar este blog advertí que no todo lo que se iba a publicar sería estrictamente "Mod", así que Dan Dare me parece un buen comienzo para lo no mod.
A principios de los noventa no sólo andaba tras los singles de Detour, buscando ese grupo mod que llenase el vacío de los Jam, si no que me dejé atrapar por los singles de otro sello independiente, Elefant Records, abriendo mis orejas hacia otros terrenos más indies. Nunca me he considerado cerrado hacia otras vías o estilos musicales y los grupos llamados indies, o los de sonido manchester, o garage, power pop o......... siguen estando en mis preferencias musicales.
Dan Dare son o eran ingleses, poco más sé de ellos, que publicaron este EP de tres canciones en el sello Elefant, que puede que fuese su tercer single o disco y que por lo que visto en su página de myspace no sé si tienen un disco titulado "The Emperor Of So-Called Cool". Los temas Faceache y Yellow Yellow tienen un cierto aire a "The Wedding Present" mezclado con un poquito de Manchester.
De paso, si a alguien le ván los sonidos indies en vinilo que se pase por el blog 7ietepulgadas

En el blog The Cornershop Of The Man! , ya comentado en el artículo anterior, han puesto en marcha la iniciativa de que puedas dejar tus impresiones sobre John Weller para pasárselas a su familia, aparte de varios artículos, uno de ellos de Steve White.

The Clique - Early Years EP (1993)

Un poco de nostalgia con este EP, que aunque parezca sacado del año 64 fué grabado en 1984 y recoge algunas de las primeras grabaciones de The Clique, incluyendo la colaboración de James Taylor. No es raro que fuese editado por Detour Records y gracias a ello pude conocer a este grupo. Creo que las canciones que aparecen en este EP (5) más tarde fueron publicadas, también por detour, en un disco: "Vanbrugh Park" basándose en las sesiones "Acid Jazz Years".
Si podeís, buscar y encontrar en algún blog amigo su "Self Preservation Society", por mi parte pondré otro single de ellos.
Tras su separación, varios miembros siguieron como "The Knave". Los buscaremos.

Somewhere between the demise of The Prisoners and the heyday of Acid Jazz emerged The Clique, a band who managed to both breathe life into the international Mod scene just as they were setting the stage to make it difficult again by influencing a number of 3rd rate imitators. Of course, it would then take at least another 5 years following The Cliques own split to rid ourselves of the majority of these bands.

Connett - Waging War On The Obvious (2009)

Mini LP de siete canciones de este grupo que he conocido hace poco. Bien es cierto que ya llevan algún tiempo circulando, puede que como Darron J Connet Band, y conocidos no solo por lo bien vestido que va el amigo Darron y su corte de pelo sino también por sus actuaciones. A nivel musical me han gustado y mucho, creo que a Paul Weller también (je), influencias de Kinks o Small Faces que siempre opino que es algo bueno.
En realidad no me suele gustar poner aquí algo que sea casi "nuevo", pero dado el caracter gratuito que tuvo su anterior trabajo "Onwards and Upwards" EP que se podía pedir en mono_media@hotmail.com (creo que este también, así lo pone en modculture ) y que aparecen casi todas las canciones (y pluses que he añadido) en su página de myspace ,pues voy y lo pongo......

The Chosen - New World 7" (1995)

Single con dos temas, que en principio saben a poco pero sólo hay que esperar un poco para su LP "Something For The Weekend". De nuevo un grupo que me alegró en los inicios de los noventa, junto a la mayoría de grupos editados por Detour Records que voy editando poco a poco. Tiene su importancia, ya que los dos temas no aparecen en el LP.

Makin' Time - Time, Trouble And Money (1987)

Aunque aparecieron en la escena mod a mediados de los ochenta, tras el "revival" ese, han sido uno de los grupos que supieron devolver la confianza e ilusión a tanto mod aportando lo que más les gustaba: soul bailable y anfetamínico, una vuelta a los orígenes pero sabiendo cuales eran, claro. Este es su tercer disco, en vivo, grabado en "The 100 Club" en 1984, editado en 1987 y re-editado por Detour Records en el 2000.

Para los conocedores del grupo, el nombre de Fay Hallam dice bastante, casada con Graham Day y aparición en grupos como The Prime Movers, Phaze o Fay Hallam Trinity... grupos que tendrán aquí su sitio. Disco fundamental: Rhythm & Soul del 85 (aunque creo que Big Beat lo reeditó y amplió con el título de "Rhythm!). Otro de sus componentes, Martin Blunt, pasó a formar parte de "The Charlatans".

Makin' Time were one of the main bearers of the torch of live Mod music in the lull after the “revival” storm. Whereas the bulk of the late 70's revivalists drew on a mixture of The Who and New Wave, our heroes from Wolverhampton drew from more authentic Mod friendly sources of 60's Soul and R&B. This is a straightforward reissue of the band's third LP from 1987 recorded live in front of a wild 100 Club audience.Many of the band's recorded favourites are here in live form “Honey”, “Here Is My Number” and “Take What You Can Get” sit alongside live favourites like “Boom Boom” and “Got My Mojo Working” (which both owe a debt to Ray Charles via The Animals and SDG) and the boisterous “Land of 1000 Dances” based “What Is Soul” (featuring vocal intrejections from Big Bob Morris of Bow Street Runners infamy !). If you've got the original vinyl version of this release, this is a good way to update an old favourite. Single con dos temas, el primero en plan más tranquilo y un segundo con algo más de fuerza. Si pongo este single es por referencia a su componente Keith Patterson, personaje que ha estado en grupos de Minneapolis como Funseekers, Conquerors y Autumn Leaves y también debido a un extenso comentario sobre The Funseekers aparecido en el blog BeatGaragePop por el que debeís pasar ya.

Tras una serie de singles se publicó un recopilatorio : "Beat is Murder: Cockfights & Cakefights 1992-1996" por el sello Get Hip que incluye todo lo publicado, rarezas, en vivo..... que supongo encontraré algún día.

Keith Patterson Knows Mod. This 2001 City Pages headline--shorter than a Mary Quant hemline--precedes a letter to the editor in which skinny-pant-sportin' guitarist Keith Patterson helped explain the genre to this paper's rock critics. Yessiree Brian Jones, Keith knows mod, and it's not merely a cute bowl haircut, or a slick suit, or a "The" (duh). Mod means attitude and, according to Patterson's letter, some local bands just ain't mod.
He should know. For over a decade, Patterson and his mates in the "The" bands (Funseekers, Conquerors, Autumn Leaves, and Spectors) have refined the art of dress--this is, clothing their audience in sexy, sweaty, rock 'n' roll. With the Spectors, Patterson and company (along with non-Patterson bands like the Hypstrz and Green Machine) helped reinvent the local hip-shakin' scene in the late '80s and early '90s, paying more homage to the Easybeats and the Monks (whom they cover) than another famous skinny-pant sportin' soul man--Prince. You can hear that trademark sound developing on "Beat is Murder", a collection of the Spectors' complete works and live outtakes.

Fantástico disco para un grupo del que poco importa si son o no mods. Desde luego están en mi círculo de referencias imprescindibles desde que escuché "Sitting On A Cloud" en aquellos tiempos en que te podías bajar una sola canción y tardabas diez minutos en tenerla...... Este disco se publicó en 2001 y contiene una mezcla de sonido sesentas con aires psycho y toques power pop que te hará exclamar cómo es posible que no conozca a estos tíos!!

New Brunswick, NJ's the Anderson Council formed in July of 1999. Lead vocalist/guitarist Peter Horvath and drummer/vocalist Brian King had previously been members in Seething Grey. After that group disbanded, Horvath and King decided to develop a new band that would be based on their interest in late-'60s British psych-pop and power pop. Horvath had already recorded numerous demos in this style, which he attributed to an imaginary group called "Archie Mantel & the Fireplace" (he was the sole member). Within months, they found lead guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Charles and bassist John Grubb, who were also looking to form their own band. Horvath suggested they combine their efforts.

This group adopted the name the Anderson Council, a moniker that combined the last names of the late blues musician Pink Anderson and jazz musician Floyd Council (Syd Barrett had done the same thing, but had used their two first names for his 1967 group, the Pink Floyd) and they began rehearsing. The quartet ultimately recorded a four-song EP on borrowed eight-track studio gear, which they issued the band's own label, Sinclair Recording Company in January 2000. Grubb left the band after its release; his replacement was Rob Farrell (aka Bobby Farrell), from Rotator Cuff. Farrell had been a fan of theirs since the Anderson Council's first show in November of 1999. After a tour of the southeast U.S., the band booked time at the House of Vibes studio, in Highland Park, NJ, and began working with co-producer/engineers Rick Reil and Kurt Reil (the Grip Weeds). Their full-length debut, Coloursound, was released on the Sinclair label in April 2001. Drummer and co-founder King left the band in late 2001, after the Anderson Council's first Midwestern tour. The Boys About Town - Live on KUSF Radio EP (1985)

Los años ochenta fueron bastante buenos para la escena mod, sobre todo en California, donde grupos como Manual Scan, Tell Tale Hearts, Three O'Clock, Agent Orange, Untouchables, Question e incluso Blangles (!!!) eran capaces de reunir a gran número de mods en sus conciertos, estamos hablando de concentraciones de más de cuatrocientas scooters..... Algunas bandas inglesas decidieron dar el salto a USA y desde luego fueron bien recibidas. Es el caso de Squire o The Truth que posiblemente tuvieran más exíto allí que en su propio país.

Puede que animados por ese éxito, en 1985, Ed Ball (Times), Paul Bevoir (JetSet), Anthony Meynell (Squire) y Simon Smith (Merton Parkas, Times) decidieron hacer una gira por los Estados Unidos bajo el nombre de "The Boys About Town". El EP que aparece aquí pertenece a la grabación de un programa de radio en la emisora KUSF de San Francisco e incluye cuatro temas: dos de Meynell y el resto repartido entre Ball y Bevoir. Sonido aceptable, pero desde luego es un momento histórico para todo mod que se precie.

Squire - The Place I Used To Live 7"(1994)

Seguimos con la sana costumbre de alternar discos larga duración con singles como este. Squire representan para mí la versión más Power Pop del revival mod de esos ochentas que cada uno recuerda a su manera. Canciones que uno puede silbar en la ducha, esa es mi definición del Power Pop. La verdad es que no suelo intentar destacar a un grupo más que a otro tratándose de mods de esos años, los valoro por igual y trato en conjunto, incluso a los Lambrettas, je. Así que aunque puedan sonar totalmente diferentes Squire y The Chords cada uno tiene su parcela en mi corazón musical, que bonito.
Este single fué publicado por Detour Records y contiene tres temas pertenecientes al recopilarorio de Tangerine Records, ""Get Ready To Go!", buen sello ,Tangerine.

The Chords - Live At The Rainbow 1980

Como muchos de los grupos "mod" pertenecientes al llamado revival (finales 70s), The Chords entran en el ranking de la mejor banda mod de esa época, ensalzada por unos y menospreciada por otros, puede que más puristas..... no importa. Tras la explosión y fin? del punk ,en Inglaterra surgieron cantidad de grupos mod, que aunque manteniendo la estética mod poseían también una cierta actitud punk, fijaros en la portada de este disco, mitad izquierda, mitad derecha, je. Pongo a The Chords como uno de mis grupos favoritos, grupo con singles fantásticos, un LP imprescindible "So Far Away" y un directo para no perderselo (bueno, este disco también, claro)
Este disco de 11 temas es más bien conocido como "No One Is Listening Anymore" y creo que incluyo una portada distinta, y fué editado por "Unicorn Records" en el 86. Pero si quereís saber algo más del grupo, os aconsejo una visita a El Sonido De 1979!!! donde como siempre la información es valiosa .
Creo que hace no mucho,(bueno, en el 2000) se editó un recopilatorio (final?) llamado "This Is What They Want" en dos CDs

Ocean Colour Scene - The Circle (acoustic) EP 1996

El primer disco que compré de OCS fué un maxi de vinilo :"Sway"en 1990 y dentro de mi etapa sonido Manchester. Aunque la producción de este primer EP iba encaminada hacia el sonido del momento, OCS supieron salir del posible encasillamiento y derivar hacia lo que ya conocemos. Siempre he considerado a OCS como un grupo con singles potentes y con álbumes que van cayendo poco a poco en canciones tranquilas y melódicas, lo cual no lo considero un fallo, los temas que más me gustan son esos. Este EP o single va de eso, tres temas relajados y una versión de Day Tripper. Los temas "Chelsea Walk", "Alibis" y "Day Tripper" aparecieron en el disco "B-Sides, Seasides & Freerides" que pondré un día de estos, por tenerlo en vinilo y por gustarme.

VVAA - This is Mod Vol 1 (1979-1981)

Primer recopilatorio de "rarezas" que el sello "Anagram Records" realizó en 1995 sobre grupos Mod de principios de los años ochenta.La idea era dar a conocer bandas que podían haber pasado desapercibidas entre tanta publicación de singles "hagaselo usted mismo" en esos años en Inglaterra y se hizo extensiva a USA con la publicación del Vol 6. Los grupos que aparecen en este primer volumen son de sobra conocidos por los amantes coleccionistas de lo "mod"y no aporta nada nuevo, pero reconozco su importancia e influencia cuando se publicó. Una de las consecuencias de este recopilarorio fué el interés que algunos sellos, como Detour Records (como no) demostraron por buscar, encontrar y publicar material disperso de los grupos que aparecen. Así podemos encontrar discos publicados de Circles, Amber Squad, Cigarettes, Letters.......No es dificil encontrar por la red los volúmenes de esta serie, pero me reconozco incapaz de encontrarlos a buen bitrate y con carátulas.Por lo menos rompo el maleficio con este archivo.

The Itch - Wigan To Brighton 7" (1995)

The Itch pertenecen a una época en la que fuí devoto coleccionista de singles mod, sobre todo del sello Detour Records, en los primeros 90. Estos singles los recopilé para la página 1PocodMusica (http://dtodo1poco.com/) en varios volúmenes: "VVAA Singles Grupos Mod" pero los pondré aquí por el gusto hacia su formato.

El single que tenemos hoy es el primero del grupo, tras haber realizado un maqueta o demo de tres temas que pasó por las manos de Jimmy Pursey de "Sham 69" ,dando un empujoncito para que se grabase el single en "Detour Records". Llegaron a publicar un album en 1997, "Avenue Parade" en el mismo sello (que veremos pronto) y un single con la colaboración o simpatía de Ian Page , "Secret Affair" del tema "Time For Action". En 2006 sacaron un EP, "Still Scratching" bajo la producción de Page.

The Itch were formed during Easter 1992 by Benmore brothers David and Colin, with the first foray into live performance coming the following year in the neighbouring town of Burnley. Originally a four-piece outfit, the band weathered the departure of their lead singer and continued as a three-piece. Alongside early gigs, the band's first recorded output was in the form of a three-track demo during Autumn 1993, whilst a well-known street in the boys' home town supplied the name for their debut album Avenue Parade.
The band have enjoyed links with a number of high profile artists, notably punk maestro Jimmy Pursey, who, after hearing the demo, invited the boys to fill his support slot at his gig in nearby Preston in June 1994 and then went on to perform production duties on debut single "Wigan to Brighton" the following month. A long-standing productive link has been with Ian Page (of Secret Affair fame) who in 1999 assisted with a cover of the Affair's teen anthem "Time for Action" self-released on their own label, 'Mod Inc Records' (which also appeared on the football-related compilation The Clarets Collection) and, more recently, producing the lead track on 2006's Still Scratchin' EP. "Wigan to Brighton" gained recognition via support from Radio 1 DJ John Peel and by 1998 the boys headlined the famous 100 Club in London with a honourary appearance by Chris Pope (of The Chords fame), with Pope producing a couple of demo tracks for the band the following year.
The band have been approached by Biff! Bang! Pow! Records and are recording a new three-track single during Summer 2007.(Rate Your Music)

Aunque los archivos que aparecen en este blog van dirigidos en un principio hacia el "Mundo Mod" ,tanto foráneo como Nacional, no se pretende quedarse sólo en eso. Incluiré Garage, Power Pop.... y todo lo que me guste.

Este blog nace tras un par de años en la éstupenda página 1PocodMusica y muchos de los archivos que pondré ya estuvieron por allí. La calidad de los archivos dependerá de cual haya sido su procedencia pero se intentará que sea a 320 Kbps.

The Blocked - The Prisoner in me 7" 1994

The Blocked provenían de Gales, hablo en pasado ya que tras la publicación de dos singles se disolvieron. Este es su primer single, autoeditado en 1994 y distribuido por Detour Records, con los que publicaron su segundo sencillo "Slodgers UK". Power Pop Punk Mod o etiquetas parecidas que acaban dando un sonido Blocked, escucha The Prisoner in me y lo entenderás.

Más adelante Detour publicó "Smashed Hits" con temas que debían haber salido en su momento como su primer LP.

The Blocked came bursting out of the underground Welsh music scene (the same scen that gave us Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, Stereophonics etc ...) in the early - mid 90's and soon became a cult phenomenon on the Mod scene due to their incendiary live shows. You never knew what was going to happen on stage at a Blocked gig, if the band would make it all the way through without fighting each other. One thing you could be certain of is that you were going to hear some of the tightest, toughest, angriest Mod stoke Punk stroke Power-pop in your life!

After releasing their debut "The Prisoner In Me" single on their own label, the Blocked appeared on our "Takin A Detour" compilation and then had a single in their own right on our label - the fantastic "Sloggers UK / Plastic Punks". Shortly after releasing this single, the band split,another sad story of a great band never fulfilling their potential and giving us a great album ... until now! (Detour Records)

The Event - This is The Event (1989)

Cuatro jóvenes mods fueron los integrantes del grupo "The Event", de San Diego, California.En los años ochenta se produjo en Estados Unidos y más tarde en el resto, un revival del Garage. No me suele gustar emplear la palabra revival, ya que considero que la escena garagera no se fué nunca, simplemente hay épocas en las que suelen aparecer más grupos que en otras.Dentro de este resurgir aparecieron bastantes bandas de orientación mod, o más bien orientadas hacia sonidos mods de los sesentas.La aparición de bandas como Miracle Workers o especialmente en la zona de San Diego: The Crawdaddys, más tarde The Tell Tale Hearts, y The Manual Scan puede que propiciase la salida de este grupo. Sólo publicaron este LP,en 1989,(VOXX) y para que quedase bien claro cuales eran sus preferencias musicales, sonido en mono y aires a The Creation o The Who. En este disco hicieron tres versiones: "That's All That I Need You For"de The Birds (UK), Jagged Time Lapse" de John's Children y "Things She Says" de In Crowd, el resto composiciones de la banda.

En la contraportada del LP tenemos un artículo de Mike Stax aparecido en Ugly Thing Magazine. Al disolverse ese mismo año,Mike Therieau pasó a formar parte de "Loved Ones".

La canción "She's Our Girl" apareció en el recopilatorio "Be A Caveman" de VOXX (2000), por si a alguien le suena.

Disco bastante raro, por lo menos lo que si era raro hasta ahora era encontrar unas carátulas en condiciones.
